Dear friends,

Today we celebrate Easter. Christ is risen! We celebrate the fulfillment of the promise of our redemption. A question may still haunt our minds: what is it that we celebrate our redemption, yet we still struggle with every kind of life challenges?

The response to that question is that celebrating our redemption does not exempt us from facing challenges that will even question our faith, hope, and trust in the Lord. On Good Friday, we all, like the disciples, were discouraged. Our hope for true freedom and salvation vanquished. We seemed to be left on our own with nothing to rely on. This is what we see in both the Apostles and the women at the tomb.

Yet, the voice of the Risen resonates in the ears of our hearts calling us by our names like Mary. This awakening voice comes to nurture our trust and confidence in the Lord’s faithfulness. He never deceives any who trusts in Him. For the life he has and is in fulness is the one He shares with us. So let us not be afraid. As long as we are on this journey, on this pilgrimage, we will face situations which will challenge us. Only when we focus on the Lord who broke the chains of our bondage that we will feel true freedom. And Mary demonstrates that focus through her question: “Sir, tell me where you put him so that I may go and take him.”

Taking the body of the Lord with us is what matters. This means to always strive to maintain personal connection and relationship with the Lord. For this is the source of all of our joy and the reason for our life. The question today is for us to find the true meaning of what we mean as we receive the Eucharistic body of the Lord. Through and by reception of the Eucharistic Christ, we confess that we would like to be and to remain his dwelling sacred temples. Let us, therefore, allow the light and the joy of the new life that stems from the Lord’s resurrection shine through us as we strive to respond to the call to discipleship. Let us arise and undertake the journey to proclaim the resurrection of the Lord to those around us, the unchurched, and the left behind. For He is truly risen, and we are the witnesses>

Queridos amigos,

En este Tercer Domingo de Adviento, nos alegramos en el Señor por la cercanía del nacimiento de Jesús; nuestra salvación está más cerca y nuestro consuelo al alcance de la mano. Nuestro sanador viene a restaurarnos y a sanarnos nuevamente. Él viene a sanar nuestra pobreza, nuestros corazones quebrantados y a liberarnos de toda esclavitud.

Sin embargo, el desafío que tenemos ante nosotros es nuestra ceguera debido a nuestro enfoque en la alegría y el regocijo material y pasajero. Juan nos advierte que hay alguien entre nosotros a quien no reconocemos. Por tanto, estamos invitados a abrir los ojos de nuestra fe para ver al Señor presente entre nosotros y alrededor de nosotros. Esta invitación nos dice que no tenemos que ir muy lejos ni buscar demasiado para verlo. Él está manifiesto y presente para nosotros allí en un hermano o hermana que está a vuestro lado pero a quien ignoráis; está presente en nuestros hijos cuyos padres no pueden permitirle un regalo de Navidad; él está ahí en los pobres y necesitados de quienes apartamos la mirada y descuidamos. Porque viene pobre, indefenso y marginado. El gozo de hoy se experimentará verdaderamente sólo si podemos ver al Señor a través de nuestros ojos de fe y trabajar para transformar el mundo en el reino que él viene a inaugurar.

Puesto que él es la luz que ilumina a todo aquel que lo abraza, nos consuela que la oscuridad de la desesperanza y la desesperación que nos cubre en medio de las pruebas y desafíos de la vida presente será borrada. Oremos para que la generosidad de Dios hacia nosotros pueda nutrir y fortalecer nuestra gratitud hacia Él a través de un apoyo constante y significativo a su Iglesia, nuestra Iglesia, mientras nos embarcamos en nuestro camino hacia el discipulado. Y sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

Dear friends,

On this Third Sunday of Advent, we rejoice in the Lord because of the closeness of the birth of Jesus; our salvation is nearer and our consolation at hands. Our healer is coming to restore us and to make us whole again. He is coming to heal our poverty, our broken hearts and to free us from all bondage.

The challenge in front us is however our blindness because our focus on material and passing joy and rejoicing. John warns us that there is someone among us whom we do not recognize. We are therefore invited to open the eyes of our faith to see the Lord present among us and around. This invitation tells us that we do not have to go far off or to search too much to see him. He is manifest and present to us there in a brother or sister standing at your side but whom you ignore; he is there in our children whose parents cannot afford him a Christmas present; he is there in the poor and the needy from whom we take our eyes away and neglect. For he is coming as poor, defenseless, and marginalized. Today’ joy will be truly experienced only if we can see the Lord through our eyes of faith and work towards transforming the world to the kingdom he is coming to inaugurate.

Since he is the light which enlightens everyone who embraces him, we are comforted that the darkness of hopelessness and despair that covers us amidst the trials and challenges of the present life will be wiped away. There is no more place for sadness and mourning. He says, I am making everything new, including you. So, brother and sister, time has come for you to smile and make the joy of Christmas contagious; and more precisely, time has come to think about your own action of gratitude towards God for his endless love and mercy.

This Advent season is the opportunity for us to reflect more on the relationship between discipleship and giving. When we look back in our life, we will realize how blessed we are, and amazingly good God has been and is for us. Today is the time to think about it and ask whether your generosity and support for his Church and ministry can make a difference.

Let us pray that God’s generosity for us might nurture and strengthen our gratitude towards Him through consistent and significant support for his Church, our Church as we embark on our path to discipleship. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Spanish) - November 26, 2023

Queridos amigos,

Hoy celebramos la solemnidad de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, El Rey del Universo. Con el reconocimiento de la Iglesia y del mundo del reinado de Cristo sobre todos los dominios, esta solemnidad sigue siendo una invitación para que emulemos las virtudes y características que Jesús muestra en el ejercicio de su reinado. Primero, Cristo nos enseña humildad en el desempeño de cualquier puesto de responsabilidad. En un mundo caracterizado por el hambre de reconocimiento y felicitaciones, Cristo nos enseña que el valor de una persona humana no está en función de su rango social y/o de sus logros. Más bien, el valor de una persona humana surge de la diferencia que hace en el mejoramiento del mundo, al entender cualquier responsabilidad como un ministerio y una misión a cumplir tras las huellas del Señor, el Rey Verdadero. Jesús nos muestra que la humildad es la clave para la exaltación. En segundo lugar, la solemnidad de Cristo Rey tiene que ver con el servicio. Jesús nos enseña el verdadero significado de compartir su realeza. Lo dejó claro a lo largo de su vida cuando insistió en que “el mayor entre vosotros debe ser el servidor de todos”. Estamos llamados a una vida de servicio desinteresado y, como discípulos, debemos encontrar nuestro gozo en servir al Señor a través de nuestro compromiso de servir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Jesús nos recuerda que no podemos abrazarlo y al mismo tiempo vivir lejos del compromiso de involucrarnos con valentía en la vida de la iglesia, su cuerpo. En el mundo egoísta y egocéntrico de hoy, se nos recuerda que servir a los demás sin preguntar qué hay para nosotros es la única manera en que podemos ser el reflejo de Cristo en nuestras vidas como discípulos.

Cristo Rey finalmente se trata de amor. Un Rey, que es buen pastor, da su vida por sus ovejas. Puesto que hemos sido hechos miembros del cuerpo y hemos llegado a ser uno con el Señor, el servicio se convierte para nosotros en una cuestión de vida o muerte, una cuestión de nuestra fidelidad al Señor y su mandamiento o nuestra negación de nuestro Señor en nuestra vida. . Como Jesús que es el Amor mismo como nos dice San Juan, para nosotros sus discípulos sólo podemos vivir por y a través del amor. Estamos llamados a ser una expresión del amor desinteresado de Dios por el mundo. Amar no es tener un mero sentimiento de atracción hacia alguien. El verdadero amor es poder aceptar incluso la muerte por el bien de los demás. El amor es un llamado a la muerte para uno mismo.

La pregunta para todos y cada uno de nosotros hoy es: ¿Hasta qué punto estoy dispuesto y dispuesto a hacer fructíferas en mi vida de discípulo estas tres virtudes: Humildad, Servicio y Amor para hacer tangible en mi vida la realeza de Jesús? Analicemos nuestro Camino de Discipulado aquí en Holy Cross para ayudarnos a emprender este viaje de servicio y discipulado.

Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - November 26, 2023

Dear friends,

Today we celebrate the solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, The King of the Universe. Church and world recognition of the Kingship of Christ over all dominions, this solemnity remains an invitation for us to emulate the virtues and characteristics Jesus displays in the exercise of His Kingship.

First, Christ teaches us humility in the fulfillment of any positions of responsibility. In a world characterized by hunger for recognition and congratulations, Christ teaches us that the value of a human person is not a function of their social rank and/or their achievement. Rather a human person’s worth stems from the difference they make in the betterment of the world, by understanding any responsibility as a ministry and a mission to fulfill in the footsteps of the Lord, the True King. Jesus shows us that humility is key to exaltation.

Secondly, the solemnity of Christ the King is about service. Jesus teaches us the true meaning of sharing in his kingship. He made it clear throughout his life when he insisted that “the greatest among you must be the servant of all.” We are called to a life of selfless service and, as disciples, we should find our joy in serving the Lord through our commitment to serving our brothers and sisters. Jesus reminds us that we cannot embrace him and at the same time live away from the commitment to courageously be involved in the life of the church, his body. In today’s selfish and self-centered world, we are reminded that serving others without asking what is for us in there is the only way we can be the reflection of Christ in our lives as disciples.

Christ the King is finally about love. A King, who is a good shepherd, gives his life for the sake of his sheep. Since we have been made members of the body and have become one with the Lord, service becomes a question of either life or death for us, a question of either our faithfulness to the Lord and his commandment or our denial of our Lord in our life. Like Jesus who is Love itself as St. John tells us, for us his disciples, we can live but by and through love. We are called to be an expression of God’s selfless love to the world. To love is not to have a mere feeling of attraction towards someone. True love is to be able to accept even death for the sake of others. Love is a call to death to self.

The question for all and each one of us today is: To what extent am I willing and ready to make these three virtues fruitful in my life as a disciple: Humility, Service and Love to make the kingship of Jesus tangible in my life? Let us look into our Discipleship Path here in Holy Cross to help us engage on this journey of servanthood and discipleship.

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time - November 16, 2023

Dear friends,

These three last consecutive weekends of the Ordinary Time have showered us with the teachings about the return or the coming of the Son of God. Last weekend we reflected on the story of the ten virgins, five of which were wise and five others foolish. The outcome was that if we think about the “we never know,” we will make sure we respond to the Lord’s invitation to long for everlasting life with him and work towards it.

Today, Matthew comes again with the story of the talents. That falls even more appropriately as we lean towards the end of the year and investigate our financial situation. When we look back and try to count our blessings throughout this year, we will undoubtedly be in awe to see how much God has blessed us. The talents he has given us to make them fruitful are countless. The context of today’s gospel highlights the return of the Lord which represents the last judgment when the Lord will ask each of us the following question: “what did you do with the gifts I have given you?”

The curious thing in today’s gospel is that the master does not tell his servants what to do with the money. Obviously, he expects them to follow the example he has always shown them, namely, to use the time they had as they waited for his return, to increase what they have been given. So, today, with regards to material and monetary gifts, we are invited to go back to our financial book to investigate and respond to the same question put otherwise: “as disciple and steward, what did I do with the gifts God has given me throughout this year? How generous was I with God’s blessing upon me to support the mission of the Church and participate in the building up of the kingdom of God?”

What then about spiritual gifts? Like for the material and monetary gifts, they also are to be made fruitful. Repeatedly, we have been told that using the gifts we have been given will help us to be successful in this life. Like for other gifts, Jesus wants us to be successful spiritually by using the spiritual gifts he gave us as disciples. These can be the Scriptures, the Sacraments, the time we can use for prayer, being good to others, the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as we lead others to God…, to name but a few. If we do nothing with the graces and opportunities He gives us, there will be no good we can get out of it.

The most amazing and surprising thing here is that God does not want back the gifts he gives us; he wants us to use them to help others and to increase them in ourselves. He does not want us to bury them in the ground until we see our end is near and then we can dig them up to return them to the Lord. So, let us go back to our inner world and reflect on our responses to God’s gifts to us and to the ways we have made them fruitful. Before he takes them from us to give them to others, because He does not take them back to himself for his own sake, we need to put them to work for the building up of his Church as disciples called to be witnesses to the glorious victory of the cross.

Queridos amigos,

Estos tres últimos fines de semana consecutivos del Tiempo Ordinario nos han colmado de enseñanzas sobre el regreso o la venida del Hijo de Dios. El fin de semana pasado reflexionamos sobre la historia de las diez vírgenes, cinco de las cuales eran prudentes y otras cinco insensatas. El resultado fue que si pensamos en “nunca sabemos”, nos aseguraremos de responder a la invitación del Señor de anhelar la vida eterna con él y trabajar para lograrla.

Hoy Mateo vuelve con la historia de los talentos. Eso cae aún más apropiadamente a medida que nos acercamos al final del año e investigamos nuestra situación financiera. Cuando miramos hacia atrás y tratamos de contar nuestras bendiciones a lo largo de este año, sin duda nos asombraremos al ver cuánto nos ha bendecido Dios. Son innumerables los talentos que nos ha dado para hacerlos fructíferos. El contexto del evangelio de hoy resalta el regreso del Señor que representa el juicio final cuando el Señor nos hará a cada uno de nosotros la siguiente pregunta: “¿Qué hicisteis con los dones que os he dado?”

Lo curioso del evangelio de hoy es que el amo no les dice a sus siervos qué hacer con el dinero. Evidentemente, espera que sigan el ejemplo que él siempre les ha dado, es decir, que utilicen el tiempo que tuvieron mientras esperaban su regreso para aumentar lo que se les ha dado. Entonces, hoy, con respecto a los dones materiales y monetarios, estamos invitados a volver a nuestro libro financiero para investigar y responder a la misma pregunta formulada de otra manera: “como discípulo y mayordomo, ¿qué hice con los dones que Dios me ha dado? durante todo este año? ¿Cuán generoso fui con la bendición de Dios sobre mí para apoyar la misión de la Iglesia y participar en la edificación del reino de Dios?”

¿Qué pasa entonces con los dones espirituales? Al igual que los regalos materiales y monetarios, también deben ser fructíferos. Repetidamente se nos ha dicho que utilizar los dones que nos han dado nos ayudará a tener éxito en esta vida. Al igual que con otros dones, Jesús quiere que tengamos éxito espiritual utilizando los dones espirituales que nos dio como discípulos. Estos pueden ser las Escrituras, los Sacramentos, el tiempo que podemos usar para la oración, ser buenos con los demás, la inspiración del Espíritu Santo mientras guiamos a otros a Dios…, por nombrar sólo algunos. Si no hacemos nada con las gracias y oportunidades que Él nos da, no habrá ningún bien que podamos sacar de ello. Lo más asombroso y sorprendente aquí es que Dios no quiere recuperar los dones que nos da; quiere que los usemos para ayudar a los demás y aumentarlos en nosotros mismos. Él no quiere que los enterremos en la tierra hasta que veamos que nuestro fin está cerca y luego podamos desenterrarlos para devolvérselos al Señor. Entonces, regresemos a nuestro mundo interior y reflexionemos sobre nuestras respuestas a los regalos que Dios nos ha dado y a la forma en que los hemos hecho fructíferos. Antes de que nos las quite para dárselas a otros, porque no las toma para sí mismo, debemos ponerlas a trabajar para la edificación de su Iglesia como discípulos llamados a ser testigos de la gloriosa victoria. de la Cruz. Dear friends,

Today’s gospel telling us the story of the ten virgins, five of whom were prudent and wise and five who lost out on a grand time because they were not. Two things to think about here: the call to be awake and vigilant, and the invitation to cherish our relationship with God.

Let us start with the call to be awake. This one will take us back to Saint Paul who reminds us that we are only in this life for a short time, since “our citizenship is in heaven.” The wedding celebration lasted for days and/or weeks in Jesus’ time, contrarily to our time when time and date are all set, and this for a very short time. The wise virgins have all this in their minds. “We never know,” they thought. Therefore, there should be some foresight. They brought extra oil with them, just in case, right? But the just in case became the saving foresight. The foolish virgins did not see it coming. They just thought of immediate celebration, not taking into consideration the “we never know” that led the wise to prepare for the unexpected. Put in Jesus’ perspective, we are taught about everlasting life. We are told that the wise person thinks ahead, they know some day they will have to meet their maker and they are practical. They make sure that they will be prepared when the Lord shows up on their doorstep. Thus, we are reminded to always keep in mind that we are on a journey, and therefore we need to make sure we get prepared for the just in case things do not work based on our own calculus. The foolish virgins worked based on their own calculus and everything went bad at the end.

Then comes the oil situation. We would be misled if we interpreted the oil in the story too literally. As a matter of facts, if we think of it as just a material thing or object to be shared, then we would be misled, because we will focus simply on how selfish the wise virgins would be and seemed to be. On the contrary, we are to think symbolically about it as something intangible that cannot be given to someone else. The oil here is something that we have worked for, such as a loving relationship with God, the good works we have done, or even the wisdom we have gained through prayer and meditation. In fact, the person we have come to be through God’s grace, for example, is not something we can just put in a bottle and give it to someone else. These are things we keep with us to get into the wedding feast with the groom.

As we can see, today’s gospel reading reminds us that if we would like to be wise about our journey to our true City we long for, we need foresight over short thinking that will keep us focus on the passing and ephemeral things around us. Moreover, we must protect the grace of God in us that has transformed us to a better person in our relationship with God and our neighbor. These are the fruits of our life journey that we will keep and take with us to the wedding feast of the Lord.

As we strive to respond to that call to discipleship by focusing on the goal that lies in front of us, which is eternal life, let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Queridos amigos,

El evangelio de hoy nos cuenta la historia de las diez vírgenes, cinco de las cuales fueron prudentes y sabias y cinco que perdieron un gran momento por no serlo. Dos cosas en las que pensar aquí: el llamado a estar despiertos y vigilantes, y la invitación a valorar nuestra relación con Dios.

Comencemos con el llamado a estar despiertos. Éste nos llevará de regreso a San Pablo quien nos recuerda que estamos en esta vida sólo por poco tiempo, ya que “nuestra ciudadanía está en los cielos”. La celebración de las bodas duraba días y/o semanas en tiempos de Jesús, a diferencia de nuestros tiempos, donde la hora y la fecha están todas fijadas, y esto por muy poco tiempo. Las vírgenes prudentes tienen todo esto en mente. “Nunca lo sabemos”, pensaron. Por tanto, debería haber cierta previsión. Trajeron aceite extra, por si acaso, ¿verdad? Pero el "por si acaso" se convirtió en la previsión salvadora. Las vírgenes insensatas no lo vieron venir. Sólo pensaron en la celebración inmediata, sin tomar en consideración el “nunca se sabe” que llevó a los sabios a prepararse para lo inesperado. Desde la perspectiva de Jesús, se nos enseña acerca de la vida eterna. Se nos dice que la persona sabia piensa en el futuro, sabe que algún día tendrá que encontrarse con su creador y es práctica. Se aseguran de estar preparados cuando el Señor aparezca en su puerta. Por lo tanto, se nos recuerda que siempre debemos tener en cuenta que estamos en un viaje y, por lo tanto, debemos asegurarnos de estar preparados para el caso de que las cosas no funcionen según nuestros propios cálculos. Las vírgenes insensatas trabajaron según sus propios cálculos y al final todo salió mal.

Luego viene la situación del petróleo. Nos engañaríamos si interpretáramos el aceite de la historia demasiado literalmente. De hecho, si pensamos en ello simplemente como una cosa material u objeto para compartir, entonces nos engañaremos, porque nos centraremos simplemente en lo egoístas que serían y parecían ser las vírgenes prudentes. Por el contrario, debemos pensar simbólicamente en ello como algo intangible que no se puede dar a nadie más. El aceite aquí es algo por lo que hemos trabajado, como una relación amorosa con Dios, las buenas obras que hemos hecho o incluso la sabiduría que hemos adquirido a través de la oración y la meditación. De hecho, la persona que hemos llegado a ser gracias a la gracia de Dios, por ejemplo, no es algo que podamos simplemente poner en una botella y dársela a otra persona. Como podemos ver, la lectura del evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que si queremos ser sabios en nuestro viaje hacia nuestra verdadera Ciudad que anhelamos, necesitamos previsión en lugar de pensamientos breves que nos mantendrán enfocados en las cosas pasajeras y efímeras que nos rodean. Además, debemos proteger la gracia de Dios en nosotros que nos ha transformado en mejores personas en nuestra relación con Dios y con el prójimo. Estos son los frutos del camino de nuestra vida que guardaremos y llevaremos con nosotros a las bodas del Señor.

Mientras nos esforzamos por responder a ese llamado al discipulado enfocándonos en la meta que tenemos frente a nosotros, que es la vida eterna, sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

Queridos amigos,

Las lecturas de hoy sacan a la luz dos actitudes que necesitan una elección crucial y fundamental en la vida de los seguidores de Jesucristo. Pero antes de llegar allí, la primera y tercera lecturas se relacionan con aquellos que ocupan posiciones de autoridad dentro de su comunidad, es decir, los sacerdotes que ofrecen sacrificios indignos y los fariseos y saduceos que sólo se preocupan por sus propios privilegios y reconocimientos.

Podemos sentirnos tentados a pensar que estas lecturas no nos conciernen porque somos laicos que no tenemos que liderar la celebración del sacrificio de la Eucaristía. Esto sería realmente engañoso y sería abordado como un profundo malentendido del punto que se plantea aquí. Recordemos que como discípulos aprendemos del Señor a llevar a otros a Él. Específicamente, los discípulos aprenden y lideran. Por lo tanto, a todos aquí nos preocupan estas dos actitudes: verse bien y ser bueno.

Los sacerdotes y fariseos son desafiados porque lo que más les preocupa es verse bien más que ser buenos. Jesús nos llama a ir más allá de las falsas apariencias que ofrecemos a los demás para ser la manifestación de verdaderos discípulos cuyas vidas son un recordatorio continuo del verdadero gozo que debemos anhelar. Cada uno de nosotros aquí en Santa Cruz, tenemos una porción de autoridad como discípulos, porque nos esforzamos por construir una comunidad de discípulos llamados a ser testigos de la gloriosa victoria de la Cruz. Comenzando por mí mismo, las lecturas de hoy representan para mí un desafío continuo de esforzarme siempre por desaparecer frente a Jesucristo y dejar que Él sea visto mientras nos guía como el Siervo Fiel. Tengo el desafío de ir más allá de la forma en que quiero o me gustaría que la gente me vea y demostrar quién soy realmente y quién debería ser siempre. Asimismo, todos los que ocupan puestos de liderazgo en nuestros diferentes ministerios deberían hacerse la siguiente pregunta: ¿cuál es mi principal preocupación como líder? ¿Estoy obsesionado con dar una buena imagen de mí mismo, es decir, simplemente quedar bien, o con ser bueno, que es mostrar mi identidad como discípulo? Simplemente nos dice que lo que lleva a los demás a Él es SER BUENO pero no VERSE BIEN. Por lo tanto, como discípulos, debemos esforzarnos por ser buenos testigos y mensajeros de su amor y compasión. Porque verse bien conduce a la autosatisfacción en lugar de ser una cualidad del discipulado.

Dear friends,

Today’s readings bring to light two attitudes which need a crucial and fundamental choice in the lives of the followers of Jesus Christ. But before getting there, the first and the third readings are related to those in position of authority within their community, namely the priests offering unworthy sacrifices and the Pharisees and Sadducees who care only for their own privileges and recognitions.

We may be tempted to think that these readings do not concern us because we are lay people who do not have to lead in the celebration of the sacrifice of the Eucharist. This would be really misleading and approached as a deep misunderstanding of the point being made here. Let us remember that as disciples we learn from the Lord to lead others to Him. Specifically, disciples learn and lead. Therefore, all of us are here concerned with these two attitudes: looking good and being good.

The priests and pharisees are challenged because they are mostly concerned about looking good rather than being good. Jesus calls us to go beyond the false appearances we offer to others to be the manifestation of true disciples whose lives are an ongoing reminder of the true joy which we must long for. Each one of us here at Holy cross, we have a portion of authority as disciples, because we strive to build up a community of disciples called to be witnesses to glorious victory of the Cross. Starting by myself, today’s readings stand as an ongoing challenge for me to always strive to disappear in front of Jesus Christ and let Him be seen as he leads us as the Faithful Servant. I am challenged to go beyond the way I may want or like people to see me and to demonstrate who I really am and should always be. Likewise, everyone in the position of leadership in our different ministries should ask the following question: what is my main concern as leader? Am I obsessed with giving a good image of myself, thus just looking good, or with being good, which is displaying my identity as disciple? Just tells us that what leads others to Him is BEING GOOD but not LOOKING GOOD. Therefore, as disciples, we are meant to strive to be good witnesses and messengers of his love and compassion. Because looking good leads to self-satisfaction instead of being a quality of discipleship.

Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

En esta Jornada Mundial de las Misiones el Santo Padre Francisco nos invita a reflexionar sobre la relación entre el encuentro con el Señor en la celebración de la Eucaristía y la exigencia del discipulado. En pocas palabras, nos recuerda que el discipulado misionero surge de recibir la palabra de Dios en nuestro corazón, dejar que penetre y arda dentro de nosotros para transformarnos y capacitarnos para ponernos en marcha.

Al final de cada Misa, escuchamos estas palabras: “nuestra misa ha terminado, vayan en paz a servir al Señor y a los demás”. La Jornada Mundial de las Misiones recuerda, por tanto, nuestra identidad y el propósito por el cual el Señor nos hizo sus discípulos, es decir, proclamar su amor y misericordia en el mundo, y llevar a él a todos los que están dispersos en el mundo, los pobres, los que no asisten a ninguna iglesia. , los caídos y todos aquellos que buscan un sentido a su vida.

Hoy tenemos la suerte de darle la bienvenida a las Hermanas Franciscanas de Allegany para Mission Co-op. Dear friends,

On this World Mission Day the Holy Father, Pope Francis invites us to reflect on the relationship between the encounter with the Lord in the celebration of the Eucharist and the requirement of discipleship. Simply put, he reminds us that missionary discipleship stems from receiving the word of God in out heart, letting it sink in and burn within us to transform us and empower us to set out our feet on the move.

At the end of every Mass, we hear these words: “our mass is ended, go in peace to serve the Lord and one another.” World Mission Day reminds therefore of our identity and of the purpose for which the Lord made us his disciples, namely, to proclaim his love and mercy in the world, and to bring to him all those scattered in the world, the poor, the unchurched, the fallen away and all those who seek a meaning to their life.

Today, we are blessed to welcome the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for Mission Co-op. They will share with us the challenges of missionary discipleship in a world full torn apart by violence and poverty. Our support and generosity will help lengthen their hands to reach out to those we cannot see around us. On their way from Emmaus, the disciples set out to proclaim that the Lord is truly risen, which is the source of our joy and consolation. Today, we share this joy and consolation by sharing the blessings God has bestowed upon us with those in most need.

As we welcome these disciples of the love of God for the poor and participate in the work of making this world the true beginning of the kingdom of God, let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Quizás se pregunte por qué comienzo esta reflexión con este pasaje de las Escrituras. La razón es que la próxima semana daremos la bienvenida a las Hermanas Franciscanas de Allegany para nuestra Cooperación Misionera Anual. Las hermanas Josephine Streva y Colleen Brady, OSF presentarán los desafíos del trabajo misionero y nos pedirán apoyo aquí en Holy Cross. Es un llamado al compromiso con el discipulado. Holy Cross es conocida por nuestra generosidad y apoyo al trabajo misionero. Como siempre decimos, Dios nos bendice para que podamos bendecir a otros.

Si bien las hermanas dependerán de nuestras oraciones para sus actividades misioneras, vendrán a nosotros para pedirnos ayuda y apoyo monetario. Por lo tanto, mantengamos presente esta recomendación de las Escrituras mientras nos preparamos para recibir a las hermanas y compartir con su Orden las bendiciones que Dios nos ha otorgado. Tú y yo estamos destinados a ser la diferencia que Dios quisiera hacer en las vidas de tantos pobres que dependen de las actividades misioneras de las hermanas. In the Letter to the Hebrews 6:10 we read the following: “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” ...

You may ask why I am starting this reflection with this scripture passage. The reason is that next week we are welcoming the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for our Annual Mission Co-operation. Sisters Josephine Streva and Colleen Brady, OSF will be presenting the challenges of missionary work and ask for support from us here in Holy Cross. It is a call to commitment to discipleship. Holy Cross is known for our generosity and support towards missionary work. As we always say, God blesses us so that we might bless others.

While the sisters will be relying on our prayers for their missionary activities, they are coming to us to ask for monetary help and support. Therefore, let us keep this scripture recommendation in our minds as we get ready to welcome the sisters and to share with their Order the blessings God has bestowed upon us. You and I are meant to be the difference God would like to make in the lives of the so many poor who rely on the sisters’ missionary activities. There will be a second collection next weekend to respond to the mission.

Thank you so very for your generosity and support towards this cause as we strive to demonstrate our commitment to discipleship. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish community alongside the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany who are visiting us next weekend.

Hoy celebramos el Domingo Catequético. En nuestra diócesis también es la celebración del Encuentro Eucarístico, cuando nos reunimos como Pueblo de Dios para profesar en voz alta y clara nuestra fe en la Presencia Verdadera y Real de Cristo en la Sagrada Comunión. Esta celebración nace del deseo de que todos comprendamos bien el lugar de la Eucaristía en nuestra vida como cristianos y discípulos de Cristo. La Iglesia nos enseña, y esta es la verdad absoluta, que la Eucaristía es fuente y cumbre de nuestra vida cristiana. En otras palabras, la Eucaristía hace que la Iglesia y la Iglesia celebren la Eucaristía para vivir. Entonces, pensemos hoy en el lugar y el respeto que le damos a nuestro Señor cuando lo recibimos aquí en la Mesa de la Santa Fiesta. Más precisamente, reflexiona sobre el significado de esta palabra cuando dices “Amén” en la recepción de la Eucaristía. Significa que “realmente creo que éste es verdadera y verdaderamente Cristo, su Cuerpo y Sangre, alma y divinidad que me han sido dados como remedio para mi camino de discipulado. Ahora, volvamos a nuestro Domingo Catequético. Palabras como catequesis, kerygma, evangelización se utilizan para expresar las diferentes formas en que proclamamos el reino de Dios. Sin embargo, cuando escuchamos la palabra “catequista” pensamos en aquellos discípulos que participan en nuestro programa de Formación de Fe. Si bien esto puede ser cierto, es sólo una verdad a medias. Esto se debe a que todos nosotros, bautizados en la muerte y resurrección del Señor, hemos sido comisionados. La gran comisión es una tarea que nos corresponde a todos. Por lo tanto, en este domingo catequético, aunque estemos comisionando a nuestros catequistas, es el día en que todos nos embarcamos en ese nuevo viaje de discipulado. Todos y cada uno de nosotros debemos oír la voz del Señor y escucharle cuando dice: “Ve. De todas las naciones, haced discípulos; bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo, y enseñándoles todo lo que os he mandado. Y he aquí, yo estoy siempre con vosotros”.

Este viaje de discipulado consta de dos secciones: aprendemos y lideramos. Porque “los discípulos aprenden y lideran”, en cumplimiento de la misión que han recibido del Maestro. Entonces, aquí hay una serie de preguntas para ustedes hoy: ¿cómo estoy respondiendo a este llamado? ¿Estoy abierto a las muchas oportunidades que tengo aquí en nuestra Parroquia para aprender de Jesús? ¿O simplemente creo que lo que sé es suficiente? ¿Cómo aprovecho las oportunidades de aprendizaje que tengo para fortalecerme en mi camino de discipulado? Catequista, lo eres porque eres discípulo y Cristo te encarga hoy. Él te dice: “Yo te he establecido para que vayas”. Por lo tanto, “VAYA Y HAGA DISCÍPULOS”, a través de su participación en un ministerio, a través de la extensión en su vecindario, a través de la participación en grupos pequeños, que son el alma de nuestra Comunidad de la Iglesia.

Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. In our diocese it is also the celebration of Eucharistic Encounter, as we gather together as People of God to profess loudly and clearly our faith in the True and Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Communion. This celebration stems from the desire to make sure that we all understand well that place of the Eucharist in our life as Christians and disciples of Christ. The Church teaches us, and this is the absolute truth that the Eucharist is the fount and the summit of our Christian life. In other words, the Eucharist makes the Church and the Church celebrate the Eucharist to live. So, let us think today about the place and the respect we give to our Lord when we receive him here at the Table of the Holy Feast. More precisely, reflect on the meaning of this word when you say “Amen” at the reception of the Eucharist. It means that “I truly believe that this is truly and really Christ, his Body and Blood, soul and divinity given to me as remedy for my discipleship journey. So, let us pray that the Lord might strengthen our faith in his true and real presence in Holy Communion as we receive Him and make our hearts and lives available to him as his beloved dwelling.

Now, back to our Catechetical Sunday. Words such as catechesis, kerygma, evangelization are used to express the different ways we proclaim the kingdom of God. However, when we hear the word “catechist” we think about those disciples who are involved in our Faith Formation program. While this can be true, it is only half-true. This is because all of us baptized in the death and resurrection of the Lord, we have been commissioned. The great commissioning is a task pertaining to all of us. Therefore, on this catechetical Sunday, even though we are commissioning our catechists, it is the day we all embark on that new journey of discipleship. All and each one of us ought to hear the voice of the Lord and to listen to Him as He says, “Go. Of all the nations, make disciples; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am always with you.”

This journey of discipleship comprises two sections: we learn and we lead. For “disciples learn and lead,” in fulfillment of the mission they have received from the Master. So, here is a set of questions for you today: how am responding to this call? Am I open to the many opportunities I have here at our Parish to learn from Jesus? Or do I just think that what I know is enough? How do I take benefit of the learning opportunities I have to strengthen me on my discipleship journey? Catechist, you are because you are a disciple and Christ commissions you today. He tells you, “I have established you to go.” Therefore, “GO and MAKE DISCIPLES,” through your involvement in a ministry, through outreach in your neighborhood, through participation in Small groups, which are the souls of our Church Community.

Today is your day, disciple of Christ called to be a witness to the glorious victory of the Cross. Catechetical Sunday is Discipleship Sunday. You are also called. It is your Day. May the Lord nurture your hunger for Him and your commitment to discipleship as we embark on the journey of building up his kingdom.

Hay mucho que compartir este fin de semana. Pero primero digamos unas palabras sobre las lecturas de hoy.

Hoy en día es mucho más fácil pasar por alto una situación o poner excusas para tomar medidas para corregir una mala acción. Una y otra vez escuchamos “no es asunto mío”. Y pecamos por omisión. Por otro lado, parece más fácil chismorrear o contar historias sobre personas de nuestro alrededor que se caen o cometen errores. Esto comienza siempre con las sugerentes preguntas “¿escuchaste sobre esto o aquello?” o “¿viste esto o aquello…?” Entonces nos involucramos en menospreciar la reputación de otra persona y, al mismo tiempo, no logramos marcar la diferencia.

Hoy la lectura de las Escrituras nos dice que ninguna de estas dos actitudes es una expresión de amor. Todo lo contrario. Se nos enseña cómo ganar a un hermano o hermana para Cristo. Respeto, amor y consideración por un hermano o hermana que muestra debilidad en sus decisiones es lo que Jesús nos enseña hoy. Jesús nos da el camino hacia la corrección mutua a través de un proceso de tres pasos. En primer lugar, hablar con la persona personalmente para conquistarla; lo que significa convencerlos para que abandonen sus malas acciones. Si esto falla, damos el segundo paso que es confrontar a la persona en presencia de dos o tres testigos. En tercer lugar, si el segundo paso también fracasa, llevar a la persona ante toda la Iglesia. El último paso debe considerarse relacionado con un asunto de carácter serio y público. Pero en general, la idea detrás de este proceso es que si debemos tratar de corregirnos unos a otros, debemos hacerlo por amor.

Ahora a otra información. Esta semana están previstas dos celebraciones. El primero es el martes 12 de septiembre, después de la conmemoración del trágico acontecimiento del 11 de septiembre. Nos gustaría honrar a aquellos entre nosotros que día tras día sacrifican todo para protegernos. Mientras levantamos las almas de aquellos que perdieron la vida en ese Día de oscuridad, la celebración es también una muestra de gratitud para aquellos que aún viven y una expresión de nuestro apoyo indefectible. Así que unámonos para la celebración de la Eucaristía el martes a las 7 pm. Traiga a un amigo para mostrarle nuestro amor por los socorristas, los bomberos, los agentes de policía, el personal médico y el personal de seguridad. La segunda celebración es nuestra Fiesta Parroquial, que es el jueves 14 de septiembre: Fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz. Celebramos la Cruz ya no como un árbol de vergüenza sino como fuente de nuestra salvación y nuestra única esperanza. There is a lot to share this weekend. But let’s first say a word on today’s readings.

Today it is much easier to overlook a situation or to make excuses to take action to correct an evil action. Over and over again, we hear “it is not my business.” And we sin by omission. On the other hand, it seems easier to gossip or to tell stories about people around us who happen to fall or to make mistakes. This starts always either with the suggestive questions “did you hear about this or that?” or “did you see this or that…?” Then we engage in disparaging someone else’s reputation while we fail at the same time to make a difference.

Today the Scriptures reading tell us that none of these two attitudes is an expression of love. Quite the contrary. We are taught how to win a brother or sister for Christ. Respect, love, and consideration for a brother or sister who shows weakness in his or her choices is what Jesus teaches us today. Jesus gives us the path to mutual correction through a three-step process. Firstly, to talk with the person personally to win them over; which means to sway them to give up their wrongdoing. If this fails, we take the second step which is to confront the person in the presence of two or three witness. Thirdly, if the second step also fails, to bring the person before the whole Church. The last step should be seen as related to matter of serious and public nature. But all in all, the idea behind this process is that if we should try to correct one another, it should be done out of love.

Now to other information. Two celebrations are scheduled this week. The first one is one Tuesday, September 12, following the memorial of the tragic event of September 11. We would like to honor those among us who day in and day out sacrifice everything to protect us. As we lift up the souls of those who lost their lives on that Day of darkness, the celebration is also a token of gratitude for those still living and an expression of our indefectible support. So let us come together for the celebration of the Eucharist on Tuesday at 7 pm. Bring a friend to show our love for first responders, fire fighters, police officers, medical personnel, and security personnel. The second celebration is our Parish Feast Day, which is on Thursday, September 14: the Feast if the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. We celebrate the Cross no longer as a tree of shame but a source of our salvation and our only hope. Therefore, I invite each and all of us to come to the celebration of the Eucharist in honor of our Parish as we gather and work together in the process of building a community of disciples called to be witnesses to the glorious victory of the Cross. Happy Feast Day to ourselves and to all who happen to encounter us and to find the face of Jesus Christ shinning in and through each one of us.

Queridos amigos,

La lectura del evangelio de hoy resalta dos verdades que son necesarias y cruciales en nuestra vida cristiana en nuestro camino hacia el discipulado: el lugar de Pedro como líder y el requisito previo para que un discípulo pueda llevar a otros a Jesús, es decir, una relación personal e individual. con Jesús. Comenzaré con la segunda verdad, ya que es la fuerza principal para un discipulado fructífero.

Jesús pregunta a sus discípulos por él. “¿Quién dice la gente que es el Hijo del Hombre?” Esta pregunta no significa que a Jesús le gustaría ser consciente de su propia identidad. No. Él sabe quién es: el Hijo de Dios. El propósito de la pregunta es conducir a sus discípulos del punto A al punto B, es decir, del rumor a una relación personal y confesión de quién es Él para todos y cada uno de ellos. Si hoy te hicieran la misma pregunta, seguramente dirías, y eso es lo que escuchamos una y otra vez todos los días y todas las semanas cuando nos reunimos para adorar, Jesús es el salvador, Jesús es el mesías, Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, o como Profesamos en el credo que Jesús es “Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero”, etc. Sin embargo, si bien todo esto es cierto, toda profesión de fe sigue siendo un rumor mientras sea sólo una repetición de lo que nos han enseñado. Cobra vida cuando cambia a una expresión de nuestra propia experiencia tal como la profesamos. Ése es el camino hacia el que Jesús conduce a sus discípulos con esta pregunta. En otras palabras, Jesús está diciendo: Sí, te escucho. Dime lo que la gente dice de mí. Pero para ti “¿Quién dices que soy yo?”

Nuestra respuesta a esta pregunta determina cómo cada uno de nosotros se relaciona con Jesús. ¿Es alguien que me ama, me perdona, me cura? ¿Es alguien en quien puedo confiar porque sólo quiere lo mejor para mí? ¿Es alguien que tiene autoridad para decirme cómo vivir, qué debo hacer y qué no debo hacer? ¿Es alguien con quien espero pasar la eternidad? Todas estas preguntas plantean muchas otras cuestiones, especialmente en nuestro mundo actual, particularmente aquellas relacionadas con la libertad y la sumisión. Sin embargo, estas serán entendidas sólo como oportunidades que se nos brindan para redescubrir nuestra propia identidad como discípulos e hijos de Dios. Nuestra experiencia personal de nuestra relación con Jesús es la fuerza conductora que nos da la fuerza para proclamarlo como el Hijo de Dios en quien depositamos nuestra confianza para todo.

Como vemos, se dice que la proclamación de Pedro no proviene ni de la sabiduría humana ni del conocimiento humano. Jesús lo declara procedente del Padre. Encarna el poder del Espíritu Santo que nos hace gritar y llamar a Dios Padre “Abba”. Y sólo entonces podrá asumir la responsabilidad de conducir a otros a Jesús y a la salvación. Esto es lo que significa para nosotros pasar de los rumores a la experiencia personal del amor de Dios en Jesús; experiencia sobre la cual ya no podemos permanecer en silencio. Esto es lo que significa para nosotros hoy pasar de una iglesia consumista a una iglesia misionera. Eso es lo que finalmente significa para nosotros pasar de “ocupantes de banca” a discípulos. Y este es nuestro llamado hoy: si proclamas a Jesús como el Hijo del Dios vivo con quien tienes una relación personal y particular, ¿agarrarás las llaves que hoy te entrega para llevar a otros a él?

Dear friends,

Today’s gospel reading highlights two truths that are necessary and crucial in our Christian life on our path to discipleship: the place of Peter as a leader and the prerequisite for a disciple to be able to lead others to Jesus, namely, a personal and individual relationship with Jesus. I will start with the second truth since it is the leading force for fruitful discipleship.

Jesus asks his disciples about Him. “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” This question does not mean that Jesus would like to be aware about his own identity. No. He knows who he is: the Son of God. The purpose of the question is to lead his disciples from the point A to the point B, meaning from hearsay to a personal relationship and confession of who He is for all and each one of them. It is only insofar as they make that move that they can lead others to Him.

If today you were asked the same question, you would certainly say, and that is what over and over again we hear every day and week when we gather to worship, Jesus is savior, Jesus is messiah, Jesus is Son of God, or as we profess in the creed, Jesus is “God from God, light from light, true God from true God,” and so on. However, while all this is true, every profession of faith still remains at the level of hearsay as long as it is just a repetition of what we have been taught. It becomes alive when it changes to an expression of our own experience as we profess it. That is the path toward which Jesus is leading his disciples with this question. In other words, Jesus is saying, Yes, I hear you. You tell me what people say about me. But for you “Who do you say that I am?”

Our response to this question determines how each one of us relates to Jesus. Is he someone who loves me, forgives me, heals me? Is he someone I can trust as he wants only the best for me? Is he someone who has the authority to tell me how to live, what I should do, and what I may not do? Is he someone I look forward to spending eternity with? All these questions raise many other issues especially in our world today, particularly those about freedom and submission. However, these will be understood only as opportunities we are given to rediscover our own identity as disciples and children of God. Our personal experience of our relationship with Jesus is the leading power that gives us the strength to proclaim Him as the Son of God in whom we place our trust for everything.

As we see, Peter’s proclamation is said not to come either from human wisdom or from human knowledge. Jesus declares it processing from the Father. It embodies the power of the Holy Spirit that makes us shout and call God, Father, “Abba.” And it is only then that he can carry the responsibility of leading others to Jesus and to salvation. This is what it means for us to move from hearsay to personal experience of God’s love in Jesus; experience about which we can no longer remain silent. This is what it means for us today to move from consumerist church to a missionary church. That is whit it finally means for us to move from “pew occupant” to disciple. And this is our call today: If you proclaim Jesus as the Son of the Living God with whom you have a personal and particular relationship, will you grab the keys he hands you today to lead others to him?

Espalda con espalda se nos ofrecen los eventos relacionados con la fe en las lecturas del evangelio. La semana pasada, escuchamos a Jesús desafiar a sus discípulos por su falta de fe. Los llamó a confiar en Él porque Él es el único que puede otorgarles paz y seguridad en cada situación. Confiar en Él y depender constantemente de Él nos hace caminar con Él sobre las aguas y enfrentar con valentía las tormentas de nuestra vida diaria. Una vez que nos alejamos de Él, comenzamos a hundirnos en la desesperanza, el miedo y la desesperación.

Hoy, no es la fe de los discípulos sino la de la mujer cananea, de los gentiles, es decir, no parte del pueblo elegido. Esta historia nos abre los ojos. Jesús dice, los primeros serán los últimos, y los últimos serán los primeros. Se nos recuerda centrarnos en lo más importante que buscamos del Señor: la gracia de la fe que fortalece nuestro camino de discipulado. La respuesta de Jesús a la mujer se puede comparar con las olas y las tormentas que desafiaron a los discípulos mientras estaban en la barca el fin de semana pasado. La dificultad y la aparente negativa en la respuesta de Jesús podrían haber apagado a la mujer. Sin embargo, ella sabía lo que estaba buscando con la seguridad que nadie más podía darle además de Jesús. Mantuvo su enfoque, con fe y confianza, y se le concedió su pedido.

Usted y yo somos desafiados hoy al reflexionar sobre nuestro compromiso con el discipulado. Una y otra vez, tendemos a desanimarnos y rendirnos ante los desafíos y situaciones difíciles en nuestro camino de discipulado. La persistencia, la perseverancia, la fe y la confianza son cualidades y virtudes que se nos enseña a cultivar como discípulos. Estas son las armas que debemos hacer fructíferas para pasar por la puerta estrecha. Al igual que la mujer del evangelio, estamos llamados a centrarnos en lo que es necesario y negarnos a prestar atención a lo que puede ser solo una distracción.

Entonces, veamos hoy. Mientras nos reunimos aquí, ¿dónde crees que está tu enfoque? ¿Qué hace que tu mente divague y se distraiga del Señor que te enseña y te alimenta con su palabra, cuerpo y sangre? Tal vez la duración de la espera para ver la respuesta de Dios a sus oraciones; o un niño gritando en la parte de atrás de la iglesia; o incluso la duración de la celebración, y crees que la respuesta de Dios te está esperando en el estacionamiento… Todo esto no puede elevarse al nivel de los desafíos capaces de hacer flaquear tu fe. La mujer del evangelio se para frente a ti hoy y te dice esto, si yo lo hice, tú también puedes hacerlo. Solo se necesita un poco de atención y enfoque en lo que es necesario y verás la respuesta del Señor para ti.

Mientras nos esforzamos por responder al llamado del Señor al discipulado, oremos al Señor para que aumente nuestra fe y nuestro compromiso con él. Pidamos fortaleza y valor para enfrentar con fe las tormentas, obstáculos y olas de nuestro día a día con la seguridad de que el Señor siempre nos dará lo necesario para nuestro crecimiento como discípulos para la edificación de su iglesia, nuestra comunidad de fe. Y sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

Dear friends,

Back to back we are offered the events related to faith in the gospel readings. Last week, we heard Jesus challenge His disciples for their lack of faith. He called them to trust in Him because He is the only one who can grant them peace and safety in every situation. Trusting in Him and constantly relying on Him makes us walk with Him on the waters and courageously face the storms of our daily life. Once we turn from Him, we consequently start sinking into hopelessness, fear, and despair.

Today, it is not the faith of the disciples but that of Canaanite woman, from the Gentiles, meaning not a part of the chosen people. This story is an eye opener for us. Jesus says, the first will be last, and the last will be first. We are reminded to focus on the most important thing we look for from the Lord: the grace of faith that strengthens our discipleship journey. Jesus’ response to the woman can be compared with the waves and storms that challenged the disciples while on the boat last weekend. The difficulty and the seeming refusal in the answer from Jesus could have shut the woman off. Yet, she knew what she was looking for with the assurance that no one else could give her besides Jesus. She kept her focus, with faith and trust, and she got her request granted.

You and I are challenged today as we reflect on our commitment to discipleship. Time and again, we tend to be discouraged and to give up in the face of challenges and difficult situations on our discipleship path. Persistence, perseverance, faith and trust are qualities and virtues we are taught to nurture as disciples. These are the weapons we are to make fruitful to pass through the narrow gate. Like the woman of the gospel, we are called to focus on what is necessary and refuse to pay heed and attention to what can be just a distraction.

So, let us see today. As we gather here, where do you think your focus is? What makes your mind wander and be distracted from the Lord who teaches you and feeds you with His words, body and blood? Maybe the length of waiting to see God’s response to your prayers; or a child screaming in the back of the church; or even the length of the celebration, and you think God’s answer is waiting for you in the parking lot… All these cannot be raised up to the level of the challenges able to make your faith falter. The woman of the gospel stands in front you today and tells you this, if I did it, you can also do it. It takes only a little bit of attention to and focus on what is necessary and you will see the Lord’s answer to you.

As we strive to respond to the Lord’s call to discipleship, let pray to the Lord to increase our faith and our commitment to him. Let us pray for strength and courage to face the storms, obstacles, and waves of our every day’s life with faith with the assurance that the Lord will always give us what is necessary for our growth as disciples for the building up of his church, our community of faith. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

El fin de semana pasado celebramos la Fiesta de la Transfiguración del Señor, manifestación de la naturaleza divina de Jesús y la recomendación del Padre de escucharlo como Hijo Unigénito en quien Él se complace. Mientras que para el Señor fue una transfiguración, el acontecimiento no nos llama a la transfiguración sino a la transformación radical, de conversion; porque la Palabra de Dios que escuchamos debe tener efectos en nosotros.

Hoy, se nos da el milagro de Jesús caminando sobre el agua. La particularidad de este milagro es que se aparta de la comprensión y el contexto ordinario de otros milagros que hizo Jesús. Por lo general, cuando Jesús hizo un milagro, estaba respondiendo a las necesidades de alguien: hambre, enfermedad, posesión de espíritus malignos, tormentas en el mar, etc. Pero Jesús caminando sobre el agua parece tener un propósito completamente diferente: al igual que la transfiguración, el milagro de hoy es simplemente otra manifestación de la naturaleza divina de Jesús. Recordamos las siguientes palabras: “Soy yo”. Nos retroceden al Antiguo Testamento donde Dios se define a sí mismo como “Yo soy”. Para los judíos esto estaba claro porque nadie más podía pronunciar el nombre excepto el Sumo Sacerdote. Entonces, cuando el Señor dice: “Soy yo”, le está diciendo exactamente a su discípulo que está con Dios. Por lo tanto, no hay necesidad de tener miedo.

Entonces, ¿qué nos dice todo esto? Volvemos a las lecturas del fin de semana pasado. El evangelio del Decimoctavo Domingo fue la alimentación milagrosa de más de cinco mil personas con cinco panes y dos peces. Los discípulos luchaban en su ministerio, incapaces de encontrar y dar solución al predicamento. Jesús es la solución a sus luchas y predicamentos. En esa historia de la alimentación de más de cinco mil, se nos dio una anticipación de la Eucaristía, ya que nos dice que Jesús tomó una cuenta, la bendijo, la partió y la dio. Estas son las mismas palabras usadas en la oración de la consagración de la Eucaristía. Entonces Jesús nos lleva de regreso a la fuente, la cumbre y la fuente de nuestra vida cristiana. Ahí es donde manifiesta su divinidad y se vacía por nosotros, entregándose a nosotros como verdadero alimento para nuestro camino de discipulado.

Asimismo, en el milagro de Jesús caminando sobre el agua, nos enfrentamos a la realidad de los discípulos luchando en medio de la noche, con el viento en contra y sintiendo que no avanzaban. De repente Jesús les asegura su presencia, recordándoles las palabras que les dijo en la Última Cena: “No os dejaré huérfanos”. Jesús trae seguridad y coraje. Calma sus miedos al anunciar su presencia. Hoy, mientras nos reunimos aquí para celebrar la Eucaristía, nos asegura su presencia cuando dice: “este es mi cuerpo”, “esta es mi sangre”. La seguridad de esta presencia nos dice que podemos hacer cosas maravillosas. La prueba es que Pedro es capaz de caminar sobre el agua cuando el Señor lo llama.

Usted y yo luchamos por comprender los requisitos del discipulado intencional y nos sumergimos en el miedo. El Señor nos dice hoy que su presencia es suficiente para hacernos avanzar. Solo necesitamos confiar en él y dejar que nos sostenga en sus manos en este camino de discipulado. Él dice, me tienes mientras te alimento con mi cuerpo y sacío tu sed con mi sangre. Llévame contigo y haré que tu misión tenga éxito.

Last weekend we celebrated the Feast of Transfiguration of the Lord, a manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus and the recommendation from the Father to listen to Him as the Only Begotten Son with whom He is pleased. While for the Lord it was a transfiguration, the event calls us not to transfiguration but to radical transformation, metanoia; because the Word of God we listen to should have effects on us.

Today, we are given the miracle of Jesus walking on the water. The particularity of this miracle is that it moves from the ordinary understanding and context of other miracles Jesus operated. Usually when Jesus worked a miracle, he was responding to someone’s needs: hunger, sickness, evil spirit possession, storms on the sea, and so on. But Jesus walking on the water seems to have a completely different purpose: like the transfiguration, today’s miracle is simply another manifestation of Jesus’ divine nature. We remember the following words, “It is I.” They take us back to the Old Testament where God defines himself as “I am.” For the Jews this was clear because no one else could pronounce the name except the High Priest. So, when the Lord says, “It is I,” He is exactly telling his disciple that they are with God. Therefore, there is no need to be afraid.

So, what does all this tell us? We go back to last weekend’s readings. The gospel for the Eighteenth Sunday was the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish. The disciples were struggling in their ministry, unable to find and give solution to the predicament. Jesus is the solution to their struggles and predicament. In that story of the feeding of over five thousands, we were given an anticipation of the Eucharist as it tells us that Jesus took bead, blessed it, broke it and gave it. These are the very same words used in the prayer of the consecration of the Eucharist. So Jesus takes us back to the source, the summit and the fount of our Christian life. That’s where he manifests his divinity and empties himself for our sake, giving himself to us as true food for our discipleship journey.

Likewise, in the miracle of Jesus walking on the water, we face the reality of the disciples struggling in the middle of the night, with the wind against them, and feeling as if they were making no progress. Suddenly Jesus assures them of his presence, reminding them of the words he told them at the Last Supper: “I will not leave you orphans”. Jesus brings assurance and courage. He calms their fears as he announces his presence. Today, as we gather here to celebrate the Eucharist, he assures us of his presence as he says, “this is my body,” “this is my blood.” The assurance of this presence tells us that we can do marvelous things. The proof is that Peter is able to walk on the water when the Lord calls him.

You and I struggle to understand the requirements of intentional discipleship and we dive in fear. The Lord tells us today that his presence is enough to move us forwards. We need only to trust in him and let him hold us in his hands on this journey of discipleship. He says, you have me as I feed you with my body and quench your thirst with my blood. Take me with you and I will make your mission successful.

Hoy celebramos la Transfiguración del Señor. Si bien se nos da un anticipo de lo que nos espera si confiamos en el Señor y emprendemos el camino del discipulado, la celebración de hoy es una llamada e invitación apremiante a abrir el corazón y la mente y enfocarnos en el propósito para el cual Dios nos ha elegido. . Pero antes de llegar allí, tenemos que cumplir con un requisito, a saber, creer en Jesucristo como el Hijo Unigénito de Dios, por quien tenemos salvación y vida eterna.

Aquí se destacan dos verdades. La primera es que llegamos a conocer a Jesús por lo que realmente es, es decir, el Hijo de Dios. En otras partes de los evangelios, la naturaleza especial y única de Jesús se revela en diferentes ocasiones, como calmar una tormenta, sanar a los enfermos, resucitar a los muertos, alimentar a miles con poca comida y caminar sobre el agua. La transfiguración, como tal, es única porque se repetirá sólo después de la resurrección, anunciando así la gloria del Hijo Unigénito de Dios, que es Dios. Esta creencia y fe en Jesucristo nos lleva a emprender un camino de predicación y testimonio como discípulos. Porque no estamos predicando de oídas sino lo que hemos vivido nosotros mismos, como san Pedro lo martilla en casa.

En segundo lugar, la verdad de la transfiguración viene con una invitación y un llamado del Padre: “escuchadlo”. Aquí se pretende establecer una diferencia entre dos verbos: escuchar y oír. Dios no nos dice que escuchemos a su Hijo, sino que lo escuchemos. Esto significa que tenemos que tomarnos un tiempo para reflexionar sobre sus enseñanzas para descubrir cuál es el plan de Dios para nosotros. Esto nos ayudará a descubrir la forma en que Dios quiere que vivamos. Como discípulos, escuchamos a nuestro maestro para aprender de él. Y una vez que hemos aprendido de él, llevamos a otros a él a través de nuestras formas de vida y compromiso con el discipulado.

Escuchar al Hijo de Dios significa para nosotros dejarnos transfigurar y transformar por sus palabras y por el espíritu santo. Nuestra relación con el Señor transfigurado nos comunica el poder de transformarnos en discípulos valientes y comprometidos que predican nada más que a Cristo a quien escuchamos y que nos envió a ser sus testigos. Para ello, rezaremos para que el Señor nos ayude a conocer su presencia entre nosotros hoy y siempre en el sacramento de su cuerpo y sangre, la sagrada Comunión.

Y sigamos orando los unos por los otros y por nuestra familia parroquial, para que nuestra experiencia de hoy en la montaña con el Señor no nos lleve a escapar de los desafíos del discipulado, sino que nos fortalezca para bajar la montaña a proclamar nuestro y experiencia particular con el Señor.

The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord - August 6, 2023

Dear friends,

Today we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord. While we are given the foretaste of what awaits us if we rely on the Lord and embark on the path of discipleship, today’s celebration is a pressing call and invitation to open our hearts and minds and to focus on the purpose for which God has chosen us. But before getting there, we have to fulfill a requirement, namely, to believe in Jesus Christ as the Only Son of God, through and by whom we have salvation and everlasting life.

Two truths are highlighted here. The first is that we come to know Jesus for who he truly is, namely, the Son of God. In other parts of the gospels Jesus’ special and unique nature is revealed on different occasions such as calming a storm, healing the sick, raising the dead, feeding thousands with small amount of food, and walking on the water. The transfiguration, as it is, is unique because it will be repeated only after the resurrection, announcing therefore the glory of the Only Begotten Son of God, who is God. This belief and faith in Jesus Christ leads us to engage on a journey of preaching and witness as disciples. Because we are not preaching just a hearsay but what we have experienced ourselves, as Saint Peter hammers it at home.

Secondly, the truth of the transfiguration comes with an invitation and a call from the Father: “listen to him.” Here we are meant to establish a difference between two verbs: to listen and to hear. God does not tell us to hear his Son, but to listen to him. This means that we have to take time to reflect on his teachings to discover what God’s plan is for us. This will help us to discover the way God wants us to live. As disciples, we listen to out master to learn from him. And once we have learned from him, we lead others to him through our ways of life and commitment to discipleship.

Listening to the Son of God means for us to let his words and the holy spirit transfigure and transform us. Our relationship with the transfigured Lord communicates to us the power to be transformed to courageous and committed disciples who preach nothing else but Christ whom we listened to and who sent us to be his witnesses. To do so, we will pray that the Lord will help us to know his presence with us today and always in the sacrament of his body and blood, the holy Communion.

And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family, so that our today’s experience in the mountain with the Lord might not lead us to escape from the challenges of discipleship but rather strengthens us to go down the mountain to proclaim our personal and particular experience with the Lord.

Queridos amigos,

Hay tantas cosas que nos importan y apreciamos en la vida. A veces, cuando nos sentamos y los evaluamos, nos preguntamos si valen nuestros sacrificios. Si bien estas situaciones pueden ser importantes para nosotros, hoy Jesús nos invita a considerar todas y cada una de las cosas por su valor. De todas las cosas nos dice que una es la más importante, esa es la vida eterna o, por decirlo así, el reino de los cielos.

Como discípulos, invitamos a mirar esta invitación desde una doble perspectiva. Por un lado, se trata de nosotros mismos. Todos aspiramos a ir al cielo. Sin embargo, sobrecargamos nuestro deseo del cielo con tantos otros detalles y, a veces, cosas innecesarias que ahogan nuestro deseo y lo marchitan. Hoy, Jesús nos dice que no hay nada que se pueda comparar con el reino de los cielos. Nada puede compararse con la vida eterna que solo él puede darnos. Lo único que podemos hacer y que Él espera de nosotros es la apertura a su llamada de discípulos. Dejémonos todos transformar por el resplandor de su luz en esta eucaristía para responder a la llamada. En segundo lugar, una vez que dejemos que nuestro corazón sea transformado por el poder de su amor y nos centremos en lo más importante, que es el cielo y la vida eterna, tendremos el valor de vender todo lo demás. No retendremos nada para nosotros porque nuestra vida será su vida en nosotros. Transformados por Cristo, emprendemos el camino del discipulado para llegar a los demás y llevarlos a Jesús que nos llama a seguirlo.

De hecho, nada se puede comparar con el amor de Dios revelado a nosotros en Jesús. Por eso los invito a todos hoy a entregar todo lo que nos pueda hacer retroceder y derribar para abrazar el reino que se nos ofrece en la eucaristía: nuestras angustias, enfermedades, incomprensiones, carencias, miedos, preocupaciones y todo lo demás. Porque una vez que tengamos a Cristo con nosotros, nunca más nos faltará nada más. Y sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

There are so many things we care about and we cherish in life. Sometimes, when we sit back and assess them, we wonder whether they are worth of our sacrifices. While these situations can be important for us, today Jesus invites us to consider every and each thing for its worth. Of all things, he tells us that one is the most important, that is eternal life or, to say the kingdom of heaven.

As disciples, we are invited to look at this invitation from a double perspective. For one, it is about ourselves. We all aspire to go to heaven. Yet we overload our desire of heaven with so many other details and sometimes unnecessary things which choke our desire and make it wither. Today, Jesus tells us that there is nothing that can be put on a balance to compare with the kingdom of heaven. Nothing can be compared with everlasting life which only he can give us. The only thing we can do and which he expects from us is openness to his call as disciple. Let us all be transformed by the radiance of his light in this eucharist to respond to the call. Secondly, once we let our hearts be transformed by the power of his love, and we focus on the most important thing, which is heaven and everlasting life, we will have the courage to sell everything else. We will hold nothing for ourselves because our life will be his life in us. Transformed by Christ, we embark of the path of discipleship to reach out to others and lead them to Jesus who calls us to follow him.

Indeed, nothing can be compared to the love of God revealed to us in Jesus. That is why I invite all of us today to trade everything that could pull us back and knock us down to embrace the kingdom offered to us in the eucharist: our anxieties, sickness, misunderstanding, shortcomings, fears, worries and everything else. Because once we have Christ with us, we shall never want anything else. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Queridos amigos,

Una de las declaraciones más esperadas que solemos escuchar es que “nuestro Dios es Misericordioso”; y que quien es en verdad. Sin embargo, una y otra vez esto nos lleva a dar por sentado a Dios. En las lecturas de hoy, se nos recuerda que la paciencia de Dios debe entenderse como una segunda oportunidad que nos da a cada uno de nosotros. Porque él dice: “No me complazco en la muerte de un pecador. Quiero que él/ella se arrepienta y viva”.

En nuestra vida diaria, experimentamos el temor de los sirvientes del amo de casa. Frente a la experiencia del mal en nuestra vida cotidiana, nos preguntamos si el mal va a prevalecer sobre el bien, y queremos que Dios lo separe o lo arranque de raíz, digamos que lo destruya inmediatamente. “Señor, ¿por qué no destruyes este mal que nos rodea?” le pedimos. Pero la paciencia de Dios está intrínsecamente conectada con su prudencia. Él dice: “si arrancas la mala hierba, puedes arrancar el trigo junto con ella”. Aquí se nos da no solo la lección de la paciencia, sino también la invitación a dejar todo en las manos del Señor y que Él se encargue de toda situación. Porque él sabe más que nosotros lo mejor que puede suceder y hacer.

Esta lección sobre la paciencia es un llamado a todos y cada uno de nosotros en nuestro camino hacia la santidad. Las parábolas de la levadura y del grano de mostaza son una demostración de nuestro propio camino de crecimiento. Aunque queremos amar y servir al Señor, no nos volvemos perfectos de la noche a la mañana. Debemos ser pacientes con nosotros mismos porque el crecimiento toma mucho más tiempo de lo que queremos a veces. Una vez que se siembra la semilla, muere y tarda en crecer hasta convertirse en un gran arbusto. Durante este proceso hay una gran cantidad de desafíos, calor, sequía, huracanes, personas que lo pisan, etc. Nosotros también estamos destinados a experimentar todos esos desafíos en nuestro camino de discipulado. La dependencia y la confianza en Dios nos mantendrán creciendo a pesar de todas las dificultades de nuestra vida.

Queridos amigos, la lectura del evangelio de hoy nos abre los ojos a todos, incluyéndome a mí. Permítanme compartir esto con ustedes hoy. He estado luchando con la lenta transformación que está ocurriendo en nuestra parroquia a medida que nos embarcamos en este viaje de discipulado. Tenemos nuestra visión, nuestra declaración de misión, nuestras estrategias y nuestro camino de discipulado. Necesitamos escuchar a San Pablo cuando nos invita a aprender a orar como debemos. Es solo cuando nos rendimos a la voluntad de Dios en este camino de discipulado que veremos los frutos de su gracia y bendiciones mientras permitimos que el Espíritu Santo nos ayude en nuestras oraciones al interceder por nosotros. Esto es lo que hacemos hoy cuando nos reunimos aquí para celebrar la Santa Misa. Porque es la oración más poderosa cuando nos unimos en oración. Dear friends,

One of the most expected statements we usually like to hear is that “our God is Merciful;” and that who he is indeed. Yet, time and again this leads us to sometimes take God for granted. In today’s readings, we are reminded that God’s patience is to be understood as a second chance he gives to each one of us. For he says, “I do not take pleasure at the death of a sinner. I want him/her to repent and to live.”

In our every day’s life, we experience the fear of the householder’s servants. In front of the evil experience in our daily life, we wonder whether evil is going to prevail upon good, and we want God to severe or to uproot it, say to destroy it immediately. “Lord, why do not you destroy this evil surrounding us?” we ask. But God’s patience is intrinsically connected with his prudence. He says, “if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them.” Here, we are given not only the lesson about patience, but also the invitation to leave everything in the hands of the Lord and let him take care of everything situation. For he knows more than we do the best thing to happen and to do.

This lesson about patience is a call to each and all of us on our journey to holiness. The parables of the yeast and of the mustard seed are a demonstration of our own growth journey. Although we want to love and serve the Lord, we do not become perfect overnight. We must be patient with ourselves for growth takes much longer than we want it to at times. Once the seed is sown, it dies and takes time to grow to a large bush. During this process there are a great deal of challenges, heat, drought, hurricane, people step on it, and so on. We likewise are meant to experience all those challenges on our discipleship path. Reliance and trust in God will keep us growing in spite of all the difficulties of our life.

Dear friends, today’s gospel reading is an eye opener to all of us, including myself. Let me share this with you today. I have been struggling with the slow transformation that is happening in our parish as we embark on this journey of discipleship. We have our vision, our mission statement, our strategies and our discipleship path. Over and over again, I long to see that extraordinary transformation; yet I seems to delay. Today, I am reminded, like all of us, that I should give time to God and let him proceed at his pace. The only I need to understand is to keep doing the best we can to pray and to do what God wants. This is the key to discovering the hands of God at work within me and in our parish family. You and I are called to embrace to this invitation to be patient and never give up because fulfillment belongs to God and it is his work through the Holy Spirit. We need to listen to Saint Paul as he invites us to learn to pray as we ought to. It is only when we surrender to the God’s will on this discipleship path that we will see the fruits of his grace and blessings as we let the Holy Spirit help us in our prayers by interceding for us.

This is what we do today as we gather here to celebrate the holy Mass. For it is the most powerful prayer as we join together in prayer. Let us therefore implore the Lord to grant us patience and prudence in the fulfillment of our mission as disciples. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Queridos amigos,

Estas últimas semanas hemos estado reflexionando sobre nuestro Camino de Discipulado con sus siglas ESTRELLAS. Como discípulos, estamos llamados a servir, somos transformados para transformar a otros en el camino del discipulado, nos aceptamos unos a otros y abrazamos nuestra diversidad como una oportunidad para crecer, nos acercamos a los que están fuera de las puertas de nuestra iglesia, porque los discípulos proclaman y dar testimonio, y finalmente Compartimos los tesoros que Dios nos ha dado para la edificación y la difusión de la Buena Noticia del Reino. Este acrónimo resume toda la visión que nos esforzamos por adoptar e imprimir en nuestra cultura parroquial.

Hoy, después de meditar sobre el primer paso de nuestro camino de discipulado, que es SERVIR, me gustaría invitar a todos y cada uno de nosotros a abrazar y meditar sobre el segundo paso de nuestro camino de discipulado parroquial, que es TRANSFORMAR. Para ello, invito a todos a reflexionar profundamente sobre el significado y el peso de la siguiente afirmación del Señor: “Mi palabra no volverá a mí vacía, sino que hará mi voluntad, cumpliendo el fin para el cual la envío”. Deténgase un poco y piense por un momento. Deja que el eco de estas palabras resuene una y otra vez dentro de ti y digiérelas. El Señor te dice a ti ya mí, a todos nosotros, que Él nos envía su palabra para producir efectos.

Al comienzo de este año pastoral, mientras nos embarcamos en la jornada del discipulado, me gustaría que todos y cada uno de nosotros vayamos hacia adentro y busquemos crecer en la fe y el discipulado mientras anhelamos la felicidad eterna con Él en su reino. El Señor nos dice hoy que el reino de los cielos no es ni debe ser considerado un derecho. Jesús planta la semilla de la gracia que nos transforma en nuestro corazón para ayudarnos a crecer. Esto sucederá si hacemos algo. De lo contrario, morirá. Si vive en nosotros, crecerá. Para que esto suceda en nosotros, tenemos que ser intencionales, hacer esfuerzos intencionales para crecer. Esto se debe a que ese crecimiento no es accidental. Implica tomar la decisión de que Jesús es más importante para nosotros que cualquier otra cosa o persona. Significa elegir creer que ha venido a enseñarnos el camino a Dios y elegir seguirlo fielmente. De hecho, crecer en la gracia de Dios implica paciencia mientras esperamos la plenitud del reino. Estamos llamados a abrirnos a la gracia de Dios para que nos transforme y nos capacite para transformar a los que nos rodean a través del ejemplo de nuestra vida totalmente entregada y consagrada a hacer discípulos. Dear friends,

These past weeks we have been reflecting on our Discipleship Path with its acronym STARS. As disciples, we are called to Serve, we are transformed to Transform others on the journey of discipleship, we Accept each other and we embrace our diversity as opportunity to grow, we Reach out to those outside of our church doors, because disciples proclaim and bear witness, and finally we Share the treasures God has given us for the building up and the spreading of the Good News of the Kingdom. This acronym summarizes the whole vision we strive to embrace and to imprint in our parish culture.

Today after meditating on the first step of our discipleship path, which is to SERVE, I would like to invite all and each one of us to embrace and to meditate upon the second step of our parish discipleship path, namely to TRANSFORM. To do so, I invite all of us to reflect deeply on the meaning and the weight of the Lord’s following statement: “My word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I send it.” Stop a little bit and think for a moment. Let the echo of these words resound over and over again within you and digest them. The Lord tells you and me, all of us that He sends his word to us to produce effects.

At the beginning of this pastoral year, as we embark on the journey of discipleship, I would like each and every one of us to go inward and seek to grow in faith and discipleship as we long for eternal happiness with Him in his kingdom. The Lord tells us today that the kingdom of heaven is not and should not be considered an entitlement. Jesus plants the seed of grace that transforms us in our hearts to help us grow. This will happen if only we do something. Otherwise, it will die. If it lives in us, it will grow. For this to happen in us, we have to be intentional, make intentional efforts to grow. This is because that growth is not accidental. It involves making a choice that Jesus is more important to us than anything or anyone else. It means choosing to believe that he has come to teach us the way to God, and choosing to follow him faithfully. Indeed, growing in God’s grace involves patience as we await the fullness of the kingdom. We are called to open up to God’s grace to transform us and to enable us to transform those around us through the example of our lives totally given and consecrated to making disciples. Just as God has given us the sun and the rain to make seed grow, so if we put forth effort spiritually to let God transform us, God will supply the means necessary to produce an extraordinarily abundant harvest in our lives. Our willingness and determination to be transformed by the grace God pours upon us will lead us to produce fruits.

As we open up to God’s grace that transforms us into courageous disciples called and sent to make disciples, we continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

El fin de semana pasado reflexionamos sobre la bondad y la hospitalidad como dos virtudes fundamentales del discipulado. Son signos por los que el mundo descubre quiénes somos. Somos hospitalarios y amables porque son parte de nuestra identidad como discípulos.

Hoy Jesús nos enseña la compasión. Quiere que aprendamos de él. En primer lugar, Él nos llama a Él cuando dice: “Venid a mí todos los que estáis cargados, y encontraréis descanso”. Una y otra vez, experimentamos estas palabras de Jesús en las lecturas del evangelio cuando se nos dice que “se compadecía” cada vez que veía a la multitud. La compasión es preocuparse por los demás y estar dispuesto a compartir sus apuros, penas y penas. Los hacemos nuestros mientras mostramos apoyo a otros en sus luchas. La compasión se basa en la bondad. Jesús nos lo revela a lo largo de su vida. Nos muestra que la compasión y la bondad no son solo cuestiones de sentimientos. Piensa hoy en todo lo que es una carga para ti, y llévaselo hoy. Ponlo en sus pies y deja todo allí para que él lo transforme en fuente de consuelo y fortaleza. Jesús nunca nos falla. Él hace lo que dice. Él camina la charla. Hoy, como siempre, él es todo para ti. Simplemente acércate a él y recuéstate sobre su hombro para encontrar descanso y consuelo.

Lo segundo que tomamos de la lectura del evangelio de hoy es la realidad de nuestra confusión sobre el camino a seguir mientras nos esforzamos por vivir como discípulos. Aquí también, Jesús nos ofrece una salida. Él dice: “Aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón”. Como nuestro maestro, se espera que nosotros, sus discípulos, aprendamos de él. Si podemos ser capaces de mostrar compasión y bondad, es justa y precisamente porque aprendemos de él que es la Misma Compasión y Bondad. Seguramente escuchará esto: “la bondad y la compasión también se pueden aprender del mundo, donde vemos personas amables y compasivas”. Si bien esto puede ser cierto, yo diría que es solo una verdad a medias. Esto se debe a que la compasión y la bondad del mundo están la mayor parte del tiempo contaminadas con sentimientos discretos u ocultos de autorrealización. Con Jesús, la bondad y la compasión son parte de lo que somos, es decir, discípulos que aprenden del Maestro. Para nosotros, discípulos del Señor, la bondad y la compasión son nuestras etiquetas de identificación, nos definen. Y sacamos todo de lo que celebramos en el altar del Señor, el Sacramento del amor abundante e infinito de Dios por el mundo. Por lo tanto, como discípulos, aprendemos del Señor a guiar a otros a través de nuestro compromiso de servir y señalarles a Aquel cuya compasión y bondad son eternas.

Mientras ofrecemos este sacrificio de alabanza y acción de gracias a Dios, continuamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

Dear friends,

Last weekend we reflected on kindness and hospitality as two fundamental virtues of discipleship. They are signs by which the world discovers who we are. We are hospitable and kind because they are a part of our identity as disciples.

Today Jesus teaches us compassion. He wants us to learn from him. Firstly, He calls us to him as he says, “Come to me all of you who are burdened, and you will find rest.” Time and again, we experience these words of Jesus in the gospel readings when we are told that He “was moved with pity” whenever He saw the crowds. Compassion is to have concern for others and willingness to share their predicaments, griefs, and sorrows. We make them ours as we show support for others in their struggles. Compassion is built upon kindness. Jesus reveals it to us throughout his life. He shows us that compassion and kindness are not just matters of feelings. Rather they are that force that moves us from the realm of feelings to actions. That is why healing and feeding were a part of the package he offered during his ministry.

All of us, in one or another way, experience the burden of our lives. Time and again, we get frustrated, discouraged, and even disoriented. The Lord offers us his shoulders to bear every burden on our behalf; he calls us to rely on him. Because it is only with him and in him that we can find consolation and peace. Think today about everything that is burdensome for you, and take it to him today. Lay it in his feet and abandon everything there for him to transform it to a source of comfort and strength. Jesus never fails us. He does what he says. He walks the talk. Today, as always, he is all for you. Just go to him and lay on his shoulder to find rest and solace.

The second thing we take from today’s gospel reading is the reality of our confusion about the path to take as we strive to live as disciples. Here also, Jesus offers us a way out. He says, “learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.” As our teacher, we his disciples are meant and expected to learn from him. If we can be able to show compassion and kindness, it is exactly and precisely because we learn from him who is Compassion and Kindness itself. You will certainly hear this: “kindness and compassion can be learned also from the world, where we see kind and compassionate people.” While this can be true, I would say it is just half-true. This is because the world compassion and kindness are most of the time tainted with discrete or hidden feelings of self-fulfillment. With Jesus kindness and compassion are a part of who we are, namely disciples who learn from the Master. For us, disciples of the Lord, kindness and compassion are our Name tags, they define us. And we draw everything from what we celebrate at the altar of the Lord, the Sacrament of God’s abundant and endless love for the world. Therefore, as disciples, we learn from the Lord to lead others through our commitment to serving and pointing them to the One whose compassion and kindness are eternal.

As we offer this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to God, we continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Queridos amigos,

La lectura del evangelio de este fin de semana se enfoca en uno de los pilares de nuestra fe cristiana, a saber, la bondad y la hospitalidad. Con tristeza vimos al Padre Pío mudarse a otra parroquia para una nueva experiencia pastoral dentro de nuestra diócesis.

En nombre de nuestra familia parroquial, despedimos al P. Pío asegurándole que Santa Cruz siempre será su parroquia natal. Lo extrañaremos y continuaremos orando por él y su ministerio.

Ahora volvamos a la lectura del evangelio. Jesús desafía nuestras formas de mirarnos hoy. En primer lugar, quiere que veamos en cada persona frente a nosotros nada más que un mensajero. Y un mensajero representa al remitente. En nuestro contexto, el remitente no es otro que el mismo Señor. Porque él dice: No me elegisteis vosotros, sino que yo os elegí y os encargué que vayáis y deis frutos duraderos. Así, para nosotros como discípulos del Señor, la hospitalidad es el primer paso.

¿Has pensado en el impacto que podrías tener en alguien con solo compartir tu sonrisa y mostrarle preocupación? Imagine a alguien que viene por primera vez a Holy Cross y encuentra o experimenta esa amplia y genuina sonrisa con las manos extendidas dándole la bienvenida a nuestra iglesia. Ese es el espíritu acogedor que Jesús quiere que cultivemos e implementemos en nuestra parroquia. Ese es el tipo de iglesia que el Señor quería y todavía quiere que seamos.

Hoy es el primer domingo del mes. Es el Domingo de la Etiqueta con el Nombre en nuestra parroquia. Esta es una forma de trabajar hacia la construcción de comunidad mientras nos esforzamos por conocernos y romper el cristal de la indiferencia y la introversión. A medida que nos volvemos unos a otros para interactuar unos con otros, ya no somos anónimos sino hermanos y hermanas que se llaman a sí mismos por sus nombres para construir una iglesia de piedras vivas.

Oremos para que el Señor continúe fortaleciéndonos en este camino de discipulado mientras nos transforma a través de este santo encuentro con él en la celebración de la Eucaristía. El Señor nos abraza aquí para darnos la oportunidad de abrazarnos unos a otros. Y sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

Dear friends,

This weekend’s gospel reading focuses on one of the pillars of our Christian faith, namely, kindness and hospitality. It is with sadness that we saw Father Pius move to another parish for a new pastoral experience within our diocese.

On behalf of our parish family, we bid farewell to Fr. Pius assuring him that Holy Cross will always be his home parish. We will miss him, and we will continue to pray for him and his ministry.

Now back to the gospel reading. Jesus challenges our ways of looking at each other today. First of all, he wants us to see in every person in front of us nothing else but a messenger. And a messenger represents the sender. In our context the sender is no one else but the Lord himself. For he says, you did not chose me, but I chose you and commissioned you to go, and bear fruits which last. Thus, for us as disciples of the Lord, hospitality is the first step.

Have you thought about the impact you could have on someone just by sharing your smile and showing him or her concern? Imagine someone coming for the first time to Holy Cross and encountering or experiencing that broad and genuine smile with outstretched hands welcoming him or her at our church. That is the welcoming spirit Jesus would like us to cultivate and implement in our parish. That is the kind of church the Lord wanted and still wants us to be.

Today is the first Sunday of the month. It is Name Tag Sunday in our parish. This is one way to work towards community building as we strive to know each other and to break the glass of indifference and introversion. As we turn towards one another to interact with one another, we are no longer anonymous but brothers and sisters who call themselves by their names to build a church of living stones.

Let us pray that the Lord nay continue to strengthen us on this discipleship path as he transforms us through this holy encounter with him in the celebration of the Eucharist. The Lord embraces us here to afford us the opportunity to embrace one another. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Queridos amigos,

Casi todos nosotros, de una u otra manera, podemos relacionarnos con el sentimiento de Jeremías en la primera lectura de hoy. En las noticias principales, en las calles y en casi todas partes, experimentamos la tensión como si el mundo fuera a colapsar. El miedo, las preocupaciones, las ansiedades y el estrés, todo esto nos rodea. Nos sentimos a punto de ser aplastados o destruidos como en el tiempo de Jeremías cuando el pueblo de Dios estaba a punto de ser destruido por los babilonios. Aceptar ser profeta en ese momento era como firmar el propio certificado de defunción. Nadie quería escuchar la advertencia de Dios. Y el profeta tenía razón al preguntarle a un ser humano: “¿Quién me escuchará, oh Señor”?

Hoy, en nuestro mundo, el desafío del discipulado es obvio. Como Jeremías, nos quejamos y preguntamos: “¿Quién nos escuchará, oh Señor”? Al igual que Jeremías, tenemos el trabajo y la misión muy impopular de advertir al pueblo de Dios que deben guardar su parte del pacto con Dios, lo que significa guardar los mandamientos de Dios. Desafortunadamente, la verdad obvia es que a las personas no les gusta que les digan que se están portando mal. Al igual que Jeremías que enfrentó amenazas de muerte, los discípulos de Jesucristo enfrentarán todo tipo de reprensión; serán insultados, menospreciados e incluso recibirán nombres. Las palabras de Jeremías en la primera lectura de hoy reflejan el dolor y la miseria que todo discípulo debe esperar por ser fiel a la misión de hablar las palabras de Dios.

Sin embargo, la experiencia de Jeremías estaría incompleta si nos detuviéramos ahí. La respuesta a sus preocupaciones y temores se nos da en la lectura del evangelio a la que nos conduce la primera lectura. Como podemos recordar, el acontecimiento de hoy se ve en conexión con lo que leímos el domingo pasado: Jesús acababa de elegir a sus doce apóstoles. Ahora los prepara para enviarlos como misioneros. Es audaz con ellos al advertirles que su mensaje no siempre será popular; que incluso pueden sufrir y morir por ello, pero deben predicar con valentía y no tener miedo de lo que les pueda pasar si se encuentran con el rechazo.

Como comunidad parroquial, estamos en el camino del discipulado, especialmente a través de nuestro Programa Reconstruido. Sabemos por qué el Señor nos llamó, es decir, para ser sus testigos, sus discípulos. Las preocupaciones y el miedo comienzan aquí. Nos preguntamos qué y cómo podemos responder a este llamado al discipulado ya ser piedras vivas. Esto es lo que el Señor quiere que sepas: “no necesitas ser un genio para servirme”, dice el Señor. Deja que tu corazón se abra a mi gracia. Te transformaré en un discípulo valiente e intrépido, capaz de marcar una diferencia en las vidas de los que te rodean y de los que están lejos. “No temáis”, significa confiar en el Señor. Puede comenzar a dudar; si, es normal, pero no te quedes ahí. Avanza y escucha la voz del Señor resonando en tu corazón con estas palabras de aliento: “No temas”. Estoy a tu lado, y nunca estás solo.

Dear friends,

Almost all of us in one or another way can relate to Jeremiah’s feeling in today’s first reading. On mainstream news, on the streets, and almost everywhere, we experience the tension as if the world was going to collapse. Fear, worries, anxieties, and stress, all these surround us. We feel like about to be crushed or destroyed like in the time of Jeremiah when God’s people were on the verge of being destroyed by the Babylonians. To accept to be a prophet at that time was like signing one’s own death certificate. No one wanted to listen to warning from God. And the prophet was right to ask a human being, “who will listen to me, O Lord”?

Today, in our world the challenge of discipleship is obvious. Like Jeremiah, we complain, and we ask, “who will listen to us, O Lord”? Like Jeremiah, we have the very unpopular job and mission of warning God’s people that they have to keep their part of the covenant with God, which means keeping God’s commandments. Unfortunately, the obvious truth is that people do not like to be told they are behaving badly. Like with Jeremiah who faced death threat, the disciples of Jesus Christ will face every kind of rebuke; they will be insulted, disparaged, and even given names. Jeremiah’ words in today’s first reading reflect the pain and misery every disciple should expect for being faithful to the mission of speaking God’s words.

However, Jeremiah’s experience would be incomplete if we stopped there. The answer to his worries and fear is given us in the gospel reading into which the first reading leads us. As we can remember, today event is to be seen in connection with what we read last Sunday: Jesus had just chosen his twelve apostles. Now he prepares them to send them out as missionaries. He is bold with them as he warns them that their message will not always be popular; that they may even suffer and die for it, but they must preach with courage and not be afraid of what might happen to them if they meet rejection.

As parish community, we are on the journey of discipleship, especially through our Rebuilt Program. We know why the Lord called us, namely, to be his witnesses, his disciples. Worries and fear start here. We wonder what and how we can respond to this call to discipleship and to be living stones. Here is what the Lord wants you to know: “you do not need to be a genius to serve me”, says the Lord. Just let your heart be open to my grace. I will transform you to a courageous and fearless disciple, able to make a difference in the lives of those around you as well as those far off. “Be not afraid”, means rely on the Lord. You may start hesitating; yes, it is normal, but do not stick there. Move on and listen to the voice of the Lord resonating within your heart with these words of encouragements: “Be not afraid.” I am besides you, and you are never alone.

Queridos amigos,

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de la Santísima Trinidad. Este pasado fin de semana celebramos la fiesta de Pentecostés, la venida del Espíritu Santo sobre los Apóstoles y el nacimiento de la Iglesia. Esta solemnidad nos recordó la expectativa de Dios para nosotros, principalmente que estamos llamados a ir a dar testimonio y hacer discípulos. Él nos dio el Espíritu Santo para que eso sucediera. En otras palabras, la gran comisión que celebramos en la Ascensión tomó forma en Pentecostés con el don del Espíritu Santo. En la fiesta de la Santísima Trinidad, se nos da la verdadera comprensión del tipo de vida que se espera de nosotros una vez que estamos llenos del Espíritu Santo.

En el Credo de Nicea, que retomamos este domingo, profesamos lo siguiente: “Creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor, dador de vida”. Esta vida es la que Jesús nos dio para ser preservados de toda mancha de pecado y división. Porque el Espíritu Santo es el cemento que fortalece nuestra unidad como familia de Dios. El Señor dijo que el Espíritu Santo nos dará de lo que es Suyo. Esta vida de unidad y unicidad entre las Tres Personas de la Santísima Trinidad se define como AMOR. Y de ese amor dijo Cristo, no hay mayor que dar la propia vida por el bien de los demás. Celebrar la Santísima Trinidad es celebrar la presencia de la vida divina en nosotros.

Hoy nuestro desafío de vivir el amor que se arraiga en la Santísima Trinidad constituye un llamado a revisitar nuestro abrazo a Jesucristo. La pregunta que debemos hacer es: "¿Hasta dónde quiero llegar al extender mis manos para abrazar a aquellos que buscan conocer a Dios y amarlo?" La fiesta de la Santísima Trinidad, la celebración del amor inquebrantable entre el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo es donde el Señor nos espera para demostrar que le pertenecemos. A través del misterio pascual, Jesús nos enseña el verdadero sentido de la solemnidad de hoy: Jesús nos revela la Santísima Trinidad no como doctrina sino como práctica. En sus obras y palabras, y en la acción del Espíritu Santo en el mundo, no vemos otra cosa que el amor de Dios por todos y cada uno de nosotros. Nosotros, como discípulos, constituimos los canales de visibilidad de la comunión y el amor inquebrantable entre las Tres Personas de la Santísima Trinidad.

Oremos para que siempre nos esforcemos por fortalecer el amor de Dios que brota y se nos comunica en el Misterio de la Muerte y Resurrección de Jesucristo que celebramos en esta mesa del Altar. Estemos abiertos a la gracia del Espíritu Santo que nos transforma en vasos portadores de los tesoros a través de los cuales hemos sido redimidos. Todo esto comienza con dejar que el Espíritu Santo transforme los lentes a través de los cuales nos miramos unos a otros. Descubrir sólo a Jesús en cada uno será el primer paso para abrazarnos. Entonces recordaremos que el Señor nos hizo pastorear unos de otros, llamándonos unos a otros por nuestros nombres. El “Domingo de la etiqueta con el nombre” que celebramos hoy es una de las formas en que nos involucramos en ese viaje de construir nuestra comunidad de fe.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. This past weekend, we celebrated the feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the birth of the Church. This solemnity reminded us of God’s expectation for us, mainly that we are called to go to bear witness and to make disciples. He gave us the Holy Spirit for that to happen. In other words, the great commissioning we celebrated at the Ascension took shape on Pentecost with the gift of the Holy Spirit. On the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, we are given the true understanding of the kind of life expected from us once we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

In the Nicene Creed, we resume this Sunday, we profess the following: “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life.” This life is the one Jesus gave us to be preserved from every stain of sin and division. Because the Holy Spirit is the cement that strengthens our unity as family of God. The Lord said that the Holy Spirit will give us from what is His. This life of unity and oneness between the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity is defined as LOVE. And of that love Christ said, there is no greater than giving one’s own life for the sake of others. To celebrate the Most Holy Trinity is to celebrate the presence of the divine life in us.

Today our challenge to live the love that takes roots in the Holy Trinity constitutes a call to revisit our embrace of Jesus Christ. The question we are meant to ask is, “How far do I want to go in stretching out my hands to embrace those out there seeking to know God and to love Him?” The feast of the Most Holy Trinity, the celebration of the unbreakable love between the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit is where the Lord is waiting for us to demonstrate that we belong to Him. Through Paschal mystery, Jesus teaches us the true meaning of today’s solemnity: Jesus reveals us the Holy Trinity not as a doctrine but as a practice. In his deeds and words, and the action of the Holy Spirit in the world, we see nothing else but God’s love for all and each one of us. We, as disciples, constitute the channels of the visibility of the communion and unbreakable love between the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity.

Let us pray that we may always strive to strengthen the love of God that flows from and is communicated to us in the Mystery of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ we celebrate at this table of the Altar. Let us be open to the grace of the Holy Spirit that transforms us to vessels carrying the treasures through which we have been redeemed. All this starts with letting the Holy Spirit transform the lenses through which we look at one another. To discover only Jesus in each other will be the first step to embrace. Then we will remember that the Lord made us shepherd of one another, calling each other by our names. The “Name Tag Sunday” we celebrate today is one the ways we engage on that journey of building up our community of faith.

Queridos amigos,

En Pentecostés, celebramos la Gran Comisión. En nuestra diócesis, esta celebración es siempre un eco de la visión y el llamado a Vivir Valientemente el Evangelio. Todos recordamos las siglas P.I.E.: Proclamar, Invitar y Encuentro. Pentecostés es un llamado al discipulado intencional.

Asimismo, en nuestra familia parroquial Pentecostés es una revelación del POR QUÉ de nuestra existencia como Iglesia. Existimos para proclamar la Buena Nueva y hacer discípulos. El Espíritu Santo que se nos da nos invita a emprender un nuevo camino de discipulado. Para ello, estamos llamados a abrazar y recibir el don de la fortaleza o el coraje. Como los discípulos que se encerraron en el aposento alto por miedo a los judíos después de la ascensión, nosotros estamos encerrados en nuestro miedo a proclamar alimentados por la idea de no estar bien formados o de no saber qué decir.

El Espíritu Santo cuya venida celebramos hoy está aquí para librarte de ese miedo a no saber qué decir. El Señor nos ordenó que no nos preocupáramos por lo que debemos decir, sino que confiáramos en el Espíritu Santo que nos enseña todo y que hablará a través de nosotros. El Espíritu Santo viene a desatar el potencial que está dormido dentro de ti. Los discípulos hicieron lo mismo. Todo lo que aprendieron del Señor fue como puesto en espera por miedo. Pero con la venida del Espíritu, desataron su potencial y nació la Iglesia. Por su predicación muchos se arrepintieron y fueron bautizados; fueron salvados.

Hoy nos toca a nosotros abrirnos al Espíritu Santo para dejar que nos guíe por el camino del discipulado. Solo en la medida en que abrazamos el Espíritu podemos realmente brillar como S.T.A.R.S. aquí en nuestra familia Parroquial. Como S.T.A.R.S. estamos destinados a servir, a transformar los corazones a través de las oraciones y el aprendizaje, a aceptarnos unos a otros por lo que somos, viendo nuestra diversidad como una oportunidad, a llegar a los que están fuera de nuestra Iglesia y a compartir nuestra fe, tiempo y talentos. . Esta es la forma en que podemos hacer que Pentecostés sea significativo para nosotros y para la Iglesia. Dear friends,

At Pentecost, we celebrate the Great Commissioning. In our diocese, this celebration is always an echo of the vision and the call to Courageously Live the Gospel. We all remember the acronym P.I.E.: Proclaim, Invite, and Encounter. Pentecost is a call to intentional discipleship.

Likewise, in our parish family Pentecost is a revelation of the WHY of our existence as Church. We exist to proclaim the Good News and to make disciples. The Holy Spirit we are given invites us to embark on a new journey of discipleship. To do so, we are called to embrace and receive the gift of fortitude or courage. Like the disciples who locked themselves in the upper room for fear of the Jews after the ascension, we are locked in our fear to proclaim nurtured by the idea of not being well trained or not knowing what to say.

The Holy Spirit whose coming we celebrate today is here to free you from that fear of not knowing what to say. The Lord commanded us not to worry about what we should say but only to rely on the Holy spirit who teach us everything and who will speak through us. The Holy Spirit comes to unleash the potential that is dormant within you. The disciples did likewise. Everything they learned from the Lord was like put on hold out of fear. But with the coming of the Spirit, they unleashed their potential and the Church was born. From their preaching many repented and were baptized; they were saved.

Today it is our turn to be open to the Holy Spirit to let her lead on the path of discipleship. It is only in so far as we embrace the Spirit that we can really shine as S.T.A.R.S. here at our Parish family. As S.T.A.R.S. we are meant to serve, to transform the hearts through prayers and learning, to accept each other for who we are – seeing our diversity as opportunity - , to reach out to those outside of our Church, and to share our faith, time and talents. This is the way we can make Pentecost meaningful for us and for the Church. For we received a Spirit not of fear and the Spirit of Courage, that makes us call God Abba, Father as we strive to build his Church of living stones in every step of our life.

The Ascension of the Lord (Spanish) - May 21, 2023

Queridos amigos,

La solemnidad de la Ascensión siempre nos hace reflexionar sobre el desafío de la desesperanza en tiempos de desesperación, cuando nuestras expectativas no son alcanzadas ni cumplidas. Dos veces los apóstoles se enfrentan a esta realidad, y dos veces no escuchan lo que Jesús les dice. En preparación para Su Pasión, Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que será entregado a quienes lo matarán, pero después de tres días resucitará de entre los muertos. Pero, llenos de desaliento y desesperados, volvieron a sus lugares después del entierro y su esperanza se disipó. Incluso en su viaje a Emaús, no pudieron librarse de su desesperanza y desánimo, mientras Él caminaba junto a ellos.

Hoy, igualmente, los discípulos están allí de pie, incrédulos, mirando fijamente al cielo mientras el Señor asciende. Todos olvidaron una vez más que el Señor prometió no dejarlos huérfanos. Aún así, están preguntando cuándo va a establecer el reino. ¿No les dijo ya a ellos ya todos nosotros que el reino está cerca?

Al igual que los discípulos, moramos en la desesperanza y la desesperación en tiempos de desafíos y crisis. Ante la pérdida de un ser querido, mientras luchamos con problemas de salud, malentendidos o desconfianza de los seres queridos, preocupaciones por los familiares que luchan contra la adicción, los alienados de la fe, los nietos que nos preocupan no tendrán la oportunidad de ser bautizados, etcétera. Cristo es nuestro consuelo y siempre nos abrirá camino para conocer y experimentar la verdad que, como él, que dijo “un poco y ya no veréis, y de nuevo un poco y me veréis”. ”, hará que todo funcione para permitirle celebrar la alegría eterna.

Que el Señor de todo consuelo rodee a todos ya todos nosotros en nuestro camino hacia el Señor que, aunque invisible a los ojos humanos, está siempre a nuestro lado en este camino de la vida. Y sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

The Ascension of the Lord - May 21, 2023

Dear friends,

The solemnity of the Ascension always makes us reflect on the challenge of hopelessness in time of
despair, when our expectations are neither reached nor fulfilled. Twice, the apostles face this reality,
and twice they fail to listen to what Jesus tells them. In preparation for the His Passion, Jesus tells his
disciples that he will be handed over to those who will kill him, but after three days he will rise from the
dead. But, full of discouragement and hopeless, they returned to their places after the burial and their
hope dissipated. Even on their journey to Emmaus, they could not get ride of their hopelessness and
discouragement, while He was walking alongside them.

Today, likewise, the disciples are standing there in disbelief as they look intently to the sky while the
Lord ascends. They all forgot once again that the Lord promised not to leave them as orphans. Still, they
are asking when he is going to establish the kingdom. Did not he already tell them and all of us that the
kingdom is at hands?

Like the disciples, we dwell in hopelessness and despair in times of challenges and crisis. At a loss of a
loved one, as we battle with health issues, misunderstanding or/and mistrust from loved ones, concerns
for relatives who struggle with addiction, those alienated from the faith, grandchildren we worry would
not have the opportunity to be baptized, and so on. While all these are real and true concerns, the
celebration of the ascension brings us to the realization that there should be no place for hopelessness
and despair in the heart of a disciple. For we know that the Lord has promised to remain with us and to
send us the Advocate, the Spirit of Hope and Trust. With trust and hope in the Lord, all griefs will be
transformed to sources of joy and comfort.

Today, as you meditate on the solemnity of the ascension, you may call to mind the parting of your
loved one, not being seen through human eyes anymore; and the pain it leaves in your hearts and life.
You may think about a challenging situation you are in, where everything seems to be with no outcome.
Yet, while all can appears so, think about what the Lord says todays: “You will grieve, but your grief will
become joy.” This is because we live by faith and not by sight. Christ is our consolation and he will
always make a way for us to know and to experience the truth that, like with him, who said “a little
while and you will no longer see, and again a little while later and you will see me,” will make everything
to work the to allow celebrate eternal joy.

May the Lord of all consolation surround everyone and all of us as we turn to the Lord who, although
unseen through human eyes, is always at our side on this journey of life. And let us continue to pray for
one another and for our parish family.

Queridos amigos,

Hoy celebramos el día de la madre. Me gustaría agradecer a todas las madres, hermanas, tías, abuelas, entrenadores y tutores por los sacrificios interminables que aceptan en su misión de criar y cuidar a todos los que están bajo sus responsabilidades. Ustedes son los primeros consejeros que tenemos en este viaje de la vida. Los celebramos y los elevamos a todos en nuestras oraciones.

En la lectura del evangelio de hoy, Jesús insiste en la relación entre el amor y sus mandamientos. Esto parece redundante porque sus mandamientos se resumen en el amor a Dios y el amor al prójimo. Esta insistencia nos recuerda que por nosotros mismos no hay nada que podamos hacer. Solo cuando abrimos nuestro corazón al Espíritu Santo podemos vivir verdaderamente los mandamientos. La nueva vida que tenemos en Cristo es vida en el Espíritu Santo. Esto significa para nosotros que, como Pablo, debemos tener en mente la verdad de que “ya no vivo yo, sino que Cristo vive en mí”. Y si Cristo vive en mí, me convierto en un vaso que lleva el amor y la misericordia de Cristo al mundo.

El Espíritu Santo que Jesús promete tiene la responsabilidad de enseñarnos todo y darnos discernimiento en nuestra toma de decisiones. Somos fortalecidos por el Espíritu para ser vasos que llevan el amor de Dios en todo lo que decimos y hacemos. Ser guiado por el Espíritu Santo es esforzarse siempre por demostrar una vida de virtud que brota del Espíritu Santo. Cuando Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que conocen el Espíritu, les recuerda que ya están entrenados y podados. Lo que queda es dar fruto.

Tú y yo hemos sido formados, enseñados y alimentados por Cristo en esta celebración eucarística. Cristo se nos ha revelado como verdadero Pan de Vida. Por nuestra parte, estamos invitados a dar los frutos del Espíritu Santo que nos hacen crecer y comprometernos a servir al Señor a través de nuestro servicio mutuo.

Sixth Sunday of Easter - May 14, 2023

Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate Mother’s Day. I would like to thank all mothers, sisters, aunts, grand-mothers, coaches, and guardians for the endless sacrifices you accept in your mission of raising and caring for all under your responsibilities. You are the first advisors we ever have on this journey of life. We celebrate you and we lift you all up in our prayers.

In today’s gospel reading, Jesus insists on the relationship between love and his commandments. This seems redundant because his commandments are summarized in love of God and love of neighbor. This insistence reminds us that by ourselves there is nothing we can do. It is only when we open our heart to the Holy Spirit that we can truly live up the commandments. The new life we have in Christ is life in the Holy Spirit. This means for us that, like Paul, we are meant to bear in our minds the truth that “it is no longer I who live but Christ living in me.” And if Christ lives in me, I become a vessel that carries the love and mercy of Christ to the world.

The Holy Spirit Jesus promises has the responsibility to teach us everything and the afford us discernment in our decision making. We are strengthened by the Spirit to be vessels that carry God’s love in all that we say and do. To be led by the Holy Spirit is to always strive to demonstrate a life of virtue that springs out of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus tells his disciples that they know the Spirit, he reminds them that they are already trained and pruned. What remains is to bear fruit.

You and I have been trained, taught and nourished by Christ in this Eucharistic celebration. Christ has revealed himself to us a true Bread of Life. On our part, we are invited to bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit which make us grow as well as committed to serving the Lord through our service to one another.

And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Fifth Sunday of Easter - May 7, 2023

Dear friends,

Many among us here can remember to have heard today’s gospel reading at a different and mostly sad context or situation: at the funeral of a loved one. Jesus says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God, have faith also in me… I am the way and the truth and the life.”

While these words of the Lord seem to be heard as consoling words in time of sorrows, grief, and mourning, today another light shines for us as we listen to the Lord from a completely different angle. They follow the first and the second readings which insist on the choice God has made of us, calling us from darkness to his light, and making of us a chosen race and royal priesthood.

It is exactly here that the words of the Lord bear the whole meaning. We are unworthy of the choice and we feel powerless, unprepared to follow the One who calls us. Jesus comes to comfort us in our struggles to follow him. Time and again, we tell him that we are willing to follow him. Yet, over and over again, we fail to do so. Then we are embarrassed and fearful, unable to know what to do. The Lord tells us to just fix our eyes on him. It is only with and in him that we can undertake the journey of discipleship. Because we did not choose him, but he chose and established us as disciples.

Two things to consider here. For one, Thomas tells the Lord about his confusion to understand and to follow the Lord. He says, “we do not know where you are going.” He thinks there is a path both Jesus and them should follow. But Jesus tells him that He is the way to eternal joy and true happiness. How many times have not we embarked on a wrong journey as we strive to find peace and joy? Jesus tells us today that as a chosen people we already have him. It is just a matter of listening to him and following him, because he is the way, and the truth, and the life. Once we are with him there is nothing we shall want. Think about this, that Jesus is the only one we have to rely on to have peace and solace. “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Amidst the challenges of our life, we feel powerless and confused. Jesus comes to show us where the most essential thing for our fulfillment is: in Him.

Secondly, like all of us, Philip struggles to understand the mystery of the unity between the Father and the Son. So he asks the Lord to show them the Father. Is not that our ultimate desire also? To see the Father face to face? Of course, yes. Yet, we still do not get it. Jesus enlightens us as he tells us that there is nothing else we can search for to see the Father; we need only to listen to Him and to follow him. Because his words are not his own, but those of the Father. The unity and oneness between the Father and the Son is clearly displayed and demonstrated through the unity of nature, will and desire. Because what the Father wants, the Son does it. Therefore, for us to see the Father, we need only to follow the Son who is the visible image of the invisible God, as Saint Paul puts it. Like Philip, we struggle and fail to see the Father already with us in His Only Begotten Son. Is not his name Emmanuel, meaning “God is with us”?

As we receive him in this Eucharist, we let the Holy Trinity dwell in us. To accept Jesus Christ and to welcome him in our life is to accept and to welcome the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. For the Son said, “whoever believes in me, my Father and I will come to him and we will establish our dwelling with him,” and give us a share in the place prepared with and by the Father.

Muchos de nosotros aquí podemos recordar haber escuchado la lectura del evangelio de hoy en un contexto o situación diferente y mayormente triste: en el funeral de un ser querido. Jesús dice: “No se turbe vuestro corazón. Tened fe en Dios, tened fe también en mí… Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida”.

Si bien estas palabras del Señor parecen escucharse como palabras de consuelo en tiempos de tristeza, dolor y luto, hoy brilla otra luz para nosotros al escuchar al Señor desde un ángulo completamente diferente. Siguen la primera y la segunda lectura que insisten en la elección que Dios ha hecho de nosotros, llamándonos de las tinieblas a su luz, y haciéndonos linaje elegido y real sacerdocio.

Es exactamente aquí donde las palabras del Señor tienen todo su significado. Somos indignos de la elección y nos sentimos impotentes, no preparados para seguir a Aquel que nos llama. Jesús viene a consolarnos en nuestras luchas por seguirlo. Una y otra vez le decimos que estamos dispuestos a seguirlo. Sin embargo, una y otra vez, no lo hacemos. Entonces nos sentimos avergonzados y temerosos, incapaces de saber qué hacer. El Señor nos dice que simplemente fijemos nuestros ojos en él. Sólo con y en él podemos emprender el camino del discipulado. Porque no lo elegimos nosotros, sino que él nos eligió y nos estableció como discípulos.

Dos cosas a considerar aquí. Por un lado, Tomás le dice al Señor acerca de su confusión para entender y seguir al Señor. Él dice: “No sabemos a dónde vas”. Piensa que hay un camino que tanto Jesús como ellos deben seguir. Pero Jesús le dice que Él es el camino hacia el gozo eterno y la verdadera felicidad. ¿Cuántas veces no nos hemos embarcado en un viaje equivocado mientras nos esforzamos por encontrar la paz y la alegría? Jesús nos dice hoy que como pueblo elegido ya lo tenemos. Solo es cuestión de escucharlo y seguirlo, porque él es el camino, la verdad y la vida. Una vez que estemos con él, nada nos faltará. Piensa en esto, que Jesús es el único en quien tenemos que confiar para tener paz y consuelo. "No deje que se angustien." En medio de los desafíos de nuestra vida, nos sentimos impotentes y confundidos. Jesús viene a mostrarnos dónde está lo más esencial para nuestra realización: en Él.

En segundo lugar, como todos nosotros, Felipe lucha por comprender el misterio de la unidad entre el Padre y el Hijo. Entonces le pide al Señor que les muestre al Padre. ¿No es ese nuestro último deseo también? ¿Ver al Padre cara a cara? Por supuesto que sí. Sin embargo, todavía no lo conseguimos. Jesús nos ilumina al decirnos que no hay nada más que podamos buscar para ver al Padre; sólo necesitamos escucharlo y seguirlo. Porque sus palabras no son suyas, sino del Padre. La unidad y unidad entre el Padre y el Hijo se muestra y demuestra claramente a través de la unidad de naturaleza, voluntad y deseo. Porque lo que el Padre quiere, el Hijo lo hace. Por tanto, para que podamos ver al Padre, sólo necesitamos seguir al Hijo que es la imagen visible del Dios invisible, como dice san Pablo. Como Felipe, luchamos y fallamos en ver al Padre ya con nosotros en Su Hijo Unigénito. ¿No es su nombre Emmanuel, que significa “Dios está con nosotros”?

Al recibirlo en esta Eucaristía, dejamos que la Santísima Trinidad habite en nosotros. Aceptar a Jesucristo y acogerlo en nuestra vida es aceptar y acoger al Padre, al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo. Porque el Hijo dijo: “El que cree en mí, mi Padre y yo vendremos a él y estableceremos nuestra morada con él”, y nos dará una participación en el lugar preparado con y por el Padre.

Queridos amigos,

La conversación entre los apóstoles y la multitud a la que se les predica me lleva a pensar en nuestro propio viaje de discipulado aquí en Holy Cross. Después de escuchar a los apóstoles que les dicen la verdad de que “han sido curados por las heridas de Cristo”, la multitud se “desgarra el corazón” y se da cuenta de que ya no hay lugar para la quietud. Aunque sus corazones están en llamas al darse cuenta de la cantidad de amor que Cristo tiene por ellos, aún no saben qué y cómo involucrarse para difundir este mensaje de amor y salvación. Ellos preguntan: “¿Qué vamos a hacer, hermanos?”

Este es el mensaje que resuena con nosotros aquí en Holy Cross mientras nos embarcamos en el viaje del discipulado y nos esforzamos por construir una iglesia de piedras vivas. Sé que muchos de nosotros estamos ansiosos por seguir y responder al llamado. Sin embargo, dentro de nosotros hacemos la misma pregunta: "¿Qué debemos hacer?" En otras palabras, dices que escucho este llamado al discipulado misionero, pero ¿cómo voy a seguir y qué se espera que haga?

Al igual que la respuesta de Simón Pedro a la multitud, sugeriría que, en primer lugar, adoptemos el camino del discipulado a través de estas dos palabras: aprendizaje y oración. Estos dos nos fortalecen porque confiamos en Cristo a medida que aprendemos de él los caminos de los discípulos. Estos dos nos llevarán a servir al Señor ya su pueblo aquí en Santa Cruz. El aprendizaje nos empodera para redescubrir el por qué de nuestra existencia y presencia como discípulos. Así que aquí hay oportunidades de aprendizaje que se nos ofrecen: piense en unirse a uno de los siguientes: nuestro grupo de estudio de libros, nuestra catequesis para adultos, el ministerio de adoración eucarística y el ministerio de grupos pequeños donde podemos aprender del Señor. Luego, pasamos a la primera etapa del Camino del Discipulado, que es SERVIR. Servir significa pasar de ser un espectador a participar en la vida de nuestra familia parroquial a través de los diferentes ministerios presentes aquí para hacer que Cristo viva en medio de su pueblo.

Debido a que los discípulos aprenden y guían, somos entrenados por Cristo mismo en nuestros diferentes grupos de aprendizaje para guiar a otros a Cristo. Ahora, hermano/hermana, piensa en el impacto de la conciencia de que somos sanados por las heridas de Cristo. ¿Estás entonces “conmovido de corazón” al darte cuenta del abundante amor de Cristo por ti? Sé que eres. Pero entonces, esto debería dar un paso más, pasar de asistir a la Santa Misa como una cosa entre otras, a beneficiarse del encuentro transformador con el Señor. Venimos a aprender del Señor que nos empodera en el camino del discipulado.

En los próximos meses, vamos a escuchar de cada uno de estos ministerios. Esta será la oportunidad para que los descubramos y sepamos qué hacen y cómo lo hacen. Está destinado a ser parte de esta nueva determinación y compromiso con el crecimiento de nuestra parroquia. Tenga la seguridad de mis oraciones mientras medita y se esfuerza por estar abierto al llamado que Cristo está haciendo en su corazón.

Dear friends,

The conversation between the apostles and the crowd they are preached to leads me to think about our own discipleship journey here at Holy Cross. After listening to the apostles who tell them the truth that “they have been healed by Christ’s wounds,” the crowd is “cut to the heart,” and come to the realization that there is no more place for stillness. Even though their hearts are set ablaze realizing the amount of love Christ has for them, still they do not know what and how to be involved to spread this message of love and salvation. They ask, “What are we to do, brothers?”

This is the message that resonates with us here at Holy Cross as we embark on the journey of discipleship and strive to build a church of living stones. I know many of us are eager to follow and to respond to the call. Yet, inside of us we ask the same question, “What are we to do?” In other words, you say I hear this call to missionary discipleship, but how am I going to follow and what am I expected to do?

Like Simon Peter’s response to the crowd, I would suggest that we first of all embrace the path to discipleship through these two words: learning and prayers. These two empower us because we rely on Christ as we learn from him the ways of disciples. These two will lead us to serve the Lord and his people here in Holy Cross. Learning empowers us to rediscover the why of our existence and presence as disciples. So here are opportunities for learning we are offered: think about joining one of the followings: our Book Study group, our Adult Catechesis, Eucharistic Adoration ministry, and Small group ministry where we can learn from the Lord. Then, we move to the first stage of Discipleship Path, which is to SERVE. To serve means to move from bystander to involved in the life of our parish family through the different ministries present here to make Christ alive amidst his people.

Because disciples learn and lead, we are trained by Christ himself in our different learning groups in order to lead others to Christ. Now, brother/sister, think about the impact of the awareness that we are healed by Christ’s wounds. Are you then “cut to the heart” at the realization of Christ’s abundant love for you? I know you are. But then, this should take one step farther, to move from attending the Holy mass as one thing among others, to benefit from the transforming encounter with the Lord. We come to learn from the Lord who empowers us on the journey of discipleship.

In the months ahead, we are going to hear from each one of these ministries. This will be the opportunity for us to discover them and to know what they do and how they do it. You are meant to be a part of this new determination and commitment to our parish growth. Be assured of my prayers as you meditate and strive to be open to the call Christ is placing in your heart.

La cuestión de la fe en la presencia Real de Cristo en la Eucaristía está en el centro de la crisis que enfrentamos en la Iglesia Católica. Una encuesta reciente sobre el tema reveló que un gran número de católicos, aunque practicantes y asiduos a la Santa Misa, no creen en la presencia real de Cristo en la Eucaristía. ¿Por qué este asunto erosionaría la fe?, uno se preguntaría. Es precisamente porque la Eucaristía está en el centro de nuestra vida cristiana. La Iglesia dice: “La Eucaristía es la fuente y la cumbre de nuestra vida cristiana”. En otras palabras, la Eucaristía hace a la Iglesia y la Iglesia celebra la Eucaristía para vivir.

La lectura del evangelio de hoy nos lleva de regreso a esa realidad. El Señor resucitado se une a sus discípulos en el camino de su vida. Están en camino a Emaús. Allí, Él se les aparece y entabla conversación, abriendo sus mentes a la inteligencia de las Escrituras. La tradición ha considerado el acontecimiento como la explicación de la Santa Misa con sus dos mesas: la Mesa de la Palabra y la Mesa del Sacrificio (la Liturgia de la Palabra y la Liturgia de la Eucaristía), que son las partes esenciales de la Eucaristía. Celebracion.

No obstante la importancia de la Mesa de la Palabra, es decir, la Liturgia de la Palabra, centrémonos hoy en la segunda mesa, que es la Liturgia de la Eucaristía. Se nos dice que los discípulos reconocieron al Señor al partir el pan. Allí, el Señor repite los gestos de la Última Cena: “Tomó el pan, pronunció la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio”. Inmediatamente se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron. Sin embargo, Él desapareció de su vista. Es exactamente aquí donde se realiza el milagro eucarístico. Sus ojos se abren a la verdad de la presencia real del Señor en las especies de pan y vino, que ya no son pan y vino sino cuerpo y sangre del Señor. Tenemos la bendición de ser testigos presenciales de esto. Aquí, en esta mesa, experimentamos el milagro eucarístico y se nos da al Señor como alimento para nuestro camino. El Señor nos alimenta con su Cuerpo y Sangre.

Mientras nos preparamos para recibir al Señor en esta Eucaristía, pidamos el don de la fe en la presencia verdadera y real de Aquel a quien recibimos. Abramos los ojos de nuestra fe para ver a Emmanuel, Dios con nosotros, en esta Mesa de acción de gracias. Para poder hacerlo, tendremos que dejar que nuestros corazones ardan mientras Él abre las Escrituras para nosotros y dejar que nuestros corazones abracen el fuego transformador del Espíritu Santo que consuma toda duda y desconfianza en ellos. Porque sólo en la medida en que permitamos que este poder transformador actúe en nosotros, podremos ir y compartir la alegría de la resurrección del Señor con los demás. Como discípulos del Señor, somos comisionados al final de esta celebración para ir y decir a los demás, “lo que hemos oído del Señor, lo que hemos visto con nuestros ojos y tocado con nuestras manos”, esto es exactamente lo que venimos a anunciaros”. Que Jesucristo ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y está presente, y verdaderamente presente en la Eucaristía que celebramos.

Dear friends,

The question of the faith in the Real presence of Christ in the Eucharist is one at the center of the crisis we face in the Catholic Church. A recent surveil on the matter revealed that a great number of Catholics, though practicing and regular to the Holy mass, do not believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Why would this matter erode the faith, one would ask? It is precisely because the Eucharist is at the Center of our Christian life. The Church says, “The Eucharist is the source and the summit of our Christian life.” In other words, the Eucharist makes the Church and the Church celebrates the Eucharist to live.

Today’s gospel reading takes us back to that reality. The risen Lord joins his disciples on their life journey. They are on the way to Emmaus. There, He appears to them and engages in the conversation, opening their minds to the intelligence of the Scriptures. Tradition has looked at the event as the explanation of the Holy mass with its two tables: the Table of the Word and the Table of the Sacrifice (the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of Eucharist), which are the essential parts of the Eucharistic Celebration.

Notwithstanding the importance of the Table of the Word, meaning the Liturgy of the Word, let us focus today on the second table, which is the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We are told that the disciples recognized the Lord in the breaking of the bread. There, the Lord repeats the gestures of the Last Supper: “He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.” Immediately their eyes were opened and they recognized him. Yet, He vanished from their sight. It is exactly here that the Eucharistic miracle is realized. Their eyes are opened to the truth of the real presence of the Lord in the species of bread and wine, which are no longer bread and wine but body and blood of the Lord. We have the blessing to be eyewitnesses to this. Here at this table, we experience the Eucharistic miracle, and we are given the Lord as food for our journey. The Lord feeds us with his Body and Blood.

As we prepare to receive the Lord in this Eucharist, let us ask for the gift of faith in the true and real presence of Him whom we receive. Let us open the eyes of our faith to see Emmanuel, God with us, at this Table of thanksgiving. To be able to do so, we will need to let our hearts burn as He breaks open the Scriptures for us and let our hearts embrace the transforming fire of the Holy Spirit consume every doubt and mistrust therein. Because it is only in so far as we allow this transforming power to work within us that we can be able to go and share the joy of the resurrection of the Lord with others. As disciples of the Lord, we are commissioned at the end of this celebration to go and say to others, “what we have heard from the Lord, what we have seen with our eyes, and touched with our hands,” this is exactly what we come to proclaim to you.” That Jesus Christ is risen from the dead, and he is present, and truly present in the Eucharist we celebrate.

Cuando el Santo Papa Juan Pablo II proclamó este domingo como Domingo de la Divina Misericordia, muchos pensaron que todo estaba relacionado con Santa Faustina. Si bien esto es parcialmente cierto, el Papa recordaba más que nunca al mundo entero que toda la historia de la salvación es la expresión más maravillosa de la misericordia infinita e insondable de Dios para con la humanidad. Como dice la Escritura, “siendo aún pecadores, Dios envió a su Hijo Unigénito para salvarnos y rescatarnos”. Esta es la Divina Misericordia.

La Divina Misericordia es la proclamación de la verdad de que Dios nunca aparta sus ojos de nosotros, no importa cuán profundo nos alejemos de Él. Más bien, se nos recuerda que Dios tiene sed de nosotros y de nuestra salvación. Porque su amor es para siempre. Volver a él con un corazón humilde nos hace experimentar y sumergirnos una vez más en este océano de misericordia infinita. La Divina Misericordia nos permite prestar atención al llamado de Dios de volver a él para que vivamos en la verdadera felicidad y alegría.

Por la misericordia de Dios renacemos a la novedad de vida en Cristo. Porque la resurrección de Jesucristo es también nuestra propia resurrección. La segunda lectura nos recuerda profusamente esta verdad. Pero, ¿qué significa esto para nosotros? La primera lectura es una respuesta audaz a esta pregunta. Se nos da misericordia para permitirnos ser misericordiosos, para empoderarnos en el camino del discipulado, siempre difundiendo la misericordia de Dios a través de nuestras obras y palabras. Se nos dice que los creyentes “se dedicaron a la enseñanza de los apóstoles y a la vida comunitaria, al partimiento del pan y a las oraciones”. Dios era el centro de sus vidas y esto trajo asombro y maravillas en sus vidas al ver las señales de Dios en medio de ellos.

De hecho, mostrar misericordia significa para nosotros aquí en Holy Cross abrazar nuestro camino de discipulado, lo que nos convierte en ESTRELLAS. Como estrellas, resplandecemos de la luz de Cristo resucitado. Como estrellas, somos discípulos que hacen brillar esa luz mientras servimos a nuestro Señor a través de nuestro compromiso de servir a la Iglesia y a nuestro prójimo, transformamos corazones al difundir las palabras de misericordia y promover encuentros con Dios, aceptamos y abrazamos nuestra diversidad como oportunidad y bendición para el crecimiento, alcanzamos a los que están fuera de las puertas de nuestra Iglesia, los caídos y los que no asisten a la iglesia, y finalmente, compartimos nuestra fe con valentía, nuestros talentos con humildad y nuestros tesoros con gratitud a Dios que bendijo con todas las bendiciones en su Hijo Jesucristo.

Como discípulos de Cristo, estamos llamados a nutrir el espíritu de unidad y unión para permitir que el Espíritu de Dios dé frutos en todos y cada uno de nosotros. Al igual que los creyentes de la Iglesia primitiva, estamos llamados a ser un solo corazón y un solo espíritu, ya vivir por el bien de los demás.

Second Sunday of Easter (Sunday of Divine Mercy) - April 16, 2023

Dear friends,

When Saint Pope John Paul II proclaimed this Sunday as Divine Mercy Sunday, many thought all was related to Saint Faustina. While this is partially true, the Pope was more than ever reminding the whole world that the entire salvation history is the most wonderful expression of God’s endless and unfathomable mercy to humanity. As Scripture says, “while we were still sinners, God sent his Only Son to save us and to ransom us.” This is Divine Mercy.

Divine Mercy is the proclamation of the truth that God never turns his eyes from us no matter how deep we fall away from Him. Rather, we are reminded that God thirsts for us and for our salvation. For his love endures forever. Returning to him with a humble heart makes us experience and dive once more into this ocean of endless mercy. Divine Mercy allows us to pay heed to God’s call to return to him for us to live in true happiness and joy.

Through God’s mercy we are reborn to newness of life in Christ. For the resurrection of Jesus Christ is also our own resurrection. The second reading reminds us of this truth profusely. But what does this mean for us? The first reading is a bold answer to this question. We are given mercy to enable us to be merciful, to empower us on the path of discipleship, always spreading God’s mercy through our deeds and words. We are told that the believers “devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to prayers.” God was the center of their lives and this brought awe and wonders in their lives at the sight of God’s signs amidst them.

Indeed, to show mercy means for us here at Holy Cross to embrace our discipleship path, which makes us STARS. As stars, we shine of the light of the risen Christ. As stars, we are disciples who shine that light through as we Serve our Lord though our commitment to serving the Church and our neighbors, we Transform hearts as we spread the words of mercy and promote encounters with God, we Accept and embrace our diversity as opportunity and blessing for growth, we Reach out to those outside of the doors of our Church, the fallen away, and the unchurched, and finally, we Share our faith with courage, our talents with humility and our treasures with gratitude to God who blessed us with all the blessings in his Son Jesus Christ.

As disciples of Christ, we are called to nurture the spirit of unity and togetherness to allow the Spirit of God bear fruit in each and all of us. Like the believers of the early Church, we are called to be of one heart and one spirit, and to live for the good of others.

¡Felices Pascuas! ¡Cristo ha resucitado! ¡Aleluya, aleluya!

Me gustaría dar la bienvenida a todos nuestros nuevos feligreses, invitados, visitantes ya todos nosotros aquí en Holy Cross. Les aseguro que usted y sus seres queridos están profundamente arraigados en mi corazón y elevados en oraciones a Dios mientras ofrecemos estos sagrados misterios de nuestra salvación y renovación.

A lo largo de estos últimos cuarenta días, reflexionamos junto y con nuestro Señor Jesús sobre las implicaciones del discipulado. Como comunidad de discípulos, aprendemos del Maestro que nos conduce en el camino de la relación personal con él; un viaje destinado a crecer. Quisiera felicitarnos a todos por la perseverancia que demostramos siguiendo los pasos de Jesucristo, aprendiendo de su corazón misericordioso.

Hoy celebramos la Pascua, la Resurrección del Señor. Mientras permanecemos sin palabras y asombrados por la manifestación del poder de nuestro Señor sobre la muerte y la oscuridad, también se nos recuerda que la Pascua es el comienzo de nuestro viaje de discipulado. Recordemos el mensaje que el Señor le dio a María Magdalena: “Ve y di a mis hermanos que vivo y los precedo a Galilea”. Dos verbos de acción son aquí fundamentales: Ir y Decir.

Celebrar la Pascua es, por lo tanto, un llamado para que abracemos el camino del discipulado. Mientras nos esforzamos por construir una iglesia de piedras vivas, nos comprometemos a seguir nuestro camino de discipulado aquí en Holy Cross. Una comunidad de discípulos es una comunidad resucitada y sin miedo. Iluminados por la luz de la resurrección del Señor y teniendo en nuestras mentes y corazones el mensaje central de la comisión a María Magdalena, decidimos convertirnos en las ESTRELLAS en una comunidad enfocada en el crecimiento.

STARS es el acrónimo de nuestro camino de discipulado aquí en Holy Cross. Significa que como discípulos estamos llamados a servir a Dios y a nuestro prójimo, a transformar corazones a través de encuentros con Dios, a aceptar nuestra singularidad y diferencias como comunidad bilingüe como una oportunidad de crecimiento, a alcanzar a los que están fuera de las puertas de nuestra iglesia, y Compartir nuestra fe, talentos y tesoros para la construcción de un mundo mejor.

Por lo tanto, abracemos el mensaje que el Señor le da a María Magdalena, haciéndolo nuestro, para emprender este camino del discipulado con valentía y determinación al convertirnos en una comunidad pascual, destinada a compartir las maravillas del amor de Dios por la humanidad.

Happy Easter! Christ Is Risen! Alleluia, alleluia!

I would like to welcome all our new parishioners, guests, visitors, and all of us here at Holy Cross. I assure that you and your loved ones are all deeply held in my heart and lifted up in prayers to God as we offer these sacred mysteries of our salvation and renewal.

Throughout these past forty days, we reflected alongside and with our Lord Jesus on the implications of discipleship. As a community of disciples, we learn from the Master who leads us on the journey of personal relationship with him; a journey meant to grow. I would like to congratulate all of us for the perseverance we demonstrated in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, learning from his merciful heart.

Today we celebrate Easter, the Resurrection of the Lord. While we remain speechless and in awe at the manifestation of the power of our Lord over death and darkness, we are also reminded that Easter is the beginning of our discipleship journey. Let us remember the message the Lord gave to Mary Magdalene: “Go and tell my brothers that I am alive and I am preceding them to Galilee.” Two verbs of action are fundamental here: Go and Tell.

To celebrate Easter is therefore a call for us to embrace the journey of discipleship. As we strive to build a church of living stones, we commit to following our discipleship path here at Holy Cross. A community of disciples is a risen and fearless community. Enlightened by the light of the Lord’s resurrection and bearing in our minds and hearts the core message of commission to Mary Magdalene, we resolve to become the STARS in a growth-focused community.

STARS is the acronym for our discipleship path here at Holy Cross. It means that as disciples we are called to Serve God and our neighbors, to Transform hearts through encounters with God, to Accept our uniqueness and differences as a bilingual community as opportunity for growth, to Reach out to those out of our church doors, and to Share our faith, talents, and treasures for the building up of the better world.

Let us therefore embrace the message the Lord gives to Mary Magdalene, making it our own, to engage on this path of discipleship with courage and determination as we become an Easter community, meant to share the wonders of God’s love for humanity.

Queridos amigos,

En mi cultura africana, la palabra tiene una gran importancia por lo que es. Decimos, la palabra tiene poder. Se usa para bendecir o maldecir, para edificar o para derribar. Su poder puede llegar a todas partes y traspasa todos los límites. De vez en cuando, escuchamos a la gente decir, “ten cuidado con lo que pides…” Si bien esta última frase se refiere a la oración, en África decimos, ten cuidado con tus palabras.

Hoy me gustaría sumergirme en el mundo de las diferentes palabras que escuchamos en la lectura del evangelio. Son reveladores de los diversos personajes en juego. Escuchamos palabras de fe y entrega; las palabras de remordimiento, confianza, acusación, negación, elección, miedo, enseñanza y amor.

Para resaltar el poder de las palabras, el libro de Proverbios declara lo siguiente: “El corazón del justo pondera cómo responder”. (Proverbios 15:28). Debido a que las palabras son poderosas, Santa Francisca de Sales advirtió que deben usarse como el bisturí en manos de un cirujano, cortando solo lo necesario y no tanto como para causar un daño innecesario. Por eso aconseja a los seguidores de Jesús que hablen poco, suavemente, bien, con caridad y amabilidad. Incluso cuando habla de una verdad difícil, un discípulo de Jesús puede hacerlo con amor. Porque el amor es el único criterio por el cual seremos juzgados. Es a través del amor que el mundo sabrá que somos de Cristo.

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord - April 2, 2023

Dear friends,

In my African culture, the word bears a highly importance for what it is. We say, the word has power. It is used to bless or to curse, to build up or to tear down. Its power can reach everywhere and crosses every boundary. From time to time, we hear people say, “be careful about what you are asking for…” While this last sentence refers to prayer, in Africa we say, be careful with your words.

Today, I would like to dive in the world of different words we hear in the gospel reading. They are revelatory of the various characters at play. We hear words of faith and surrender; the words of remorse, confidence, accusation, denial, choice, fear, teaching, and love.

To highlight the power of words, the book of Proverbs declares the following: “The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer.” (Proverbs 15:28). Because words are powerful, Saint Frances de Sales cautioned that they are to be used like the scalpel in the hands of a surgeon, cutting away only what is necessary and not so much as to result in unnecessary harm. He therefore advises the followers of Jesus to speak little, gently, well, charitable, and amiably. Even when speaking a difficult truth, a disciple of Jesus can do so with love. Because love is the sole criterion by and through which we will be judged. It is through love that the world will know that we are of Christ.

As we enter into Holy Week, I would like to invite all and everyone to reflect on what our words say about us. Do they reveal love, life, truth, trust, and submission to the will of God, or hate, death, falsehood, fear and submission to our will alone? Today we are invited to be like Jesus who emptied himself and took on all our limitations with the exception of sin, even death, so that we can be servants with well-trained tongues that reveal our willingness to speak truth at all circumstances wherever that might lead us.

Let us ask our Lord to strengthen our faith trust in the truth that every passion embraced in faith leads to glory. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Dear friends,

I am fundamentally amazed by the reaction Jesus gives to Martha at the grave of Lazarus, his friend. The sister of the deceased tells him that her brother has been in the tomb for four days, and “there will be stench.” But love for and of a friend does not care about facing every kind of challenge. This is what we look at today. Mary and Martha love their brother, but can they carry out that love to the extent of facing him after being in the grave for four days?

Saint Paul declares it more powerfully: “nothing will separate us from the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord.” It is exactly to free us from the stench of sin and death that he came and gave his life. It is for you and for me that He accepted suffering and death. Jesus does not shy away from the stench of our sin and weakness. He calls us out the grave where we are held hostage by sin to afford us the true freedom of God’s children and to let us go to bear him witness.

Martha thought of the still far off resurrection and life. Jesus on the contrary is telling her that life is already there. All it takes is faith and trust. Like Martha, we are tempted to think that God delays his mercy and forgiveness to us because of how far we have been or are from him. No. God never delays his mercy for his children who come to him to cry out their sins and ask for forgiveness.

Four days in the grave, that’s a long time. For us it signifies a lifetime journey. Everyone of us might see in these four days something different. For some, it might be the whole time they have been away from the Church, and they may think that there is a stench and God will think twice before offering them his mercy. For others it might be the time we have neglected to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation where God gives us a spiritual shower to cleanse us from our sins. Still, for others it might be the time we have been struggling with addiction of any kind. Today, Jesus is calling you and me out our graves to come to life.

The Eucharist we celebrate together is the sacrament of our resurrection with the Lord. Jesus shares with us his life, reassuring us that his love for us cannot be deterred by our sinfulness. No matter where we are on this journey of faith, there always is a place for us to experience his love and to grow. Lazarus, dead in the human eye, heard the call from the Lord to come out of the grave. It is our turn today, to listen to the voice of the Lord calling us to come out of every bondage to newness and fulness of life.

Estoy fundamentalmente asombrado por la reacción que Jesús le da a Marta en la tumba de Lázaro, su amigo. La hermana del difunto le dice que su hermano ha estado en la tumba durante cuatro días y “habrá mal olor”. Pero el amor por y de un amigo no se preocupa por enfrentar todo tipo de desafíos. Esto es lo que vemos hoy. María y Marta aman a su hermano, pero ¿podrán llevar a cabo ese amor hasta el punto de enfrentarse a él después de estar cuatro días en la tumba?

San Pablo lo declara con más fuerza: “nada nos separará del amor de Dios revelado en Jesucristo nuestro Señor”. Es exactamente para librarnos del hedor del pecado y de la muerte que él vino y dio su vida. Es por ti y por mí que Él aceptó el sufrimiento y la muerte. Jesús no rehuye el hedor de nuestro pecado y debilidad. Él nos llama a salir de la tumba donde somos rehenes del pecado para darnos la verdadera libertad de los hijos de Dios y dejarnos ir a darle testimonio.

Marta pensó en la resurrección y la vida aún lejanas. Jesús, por el contrario, le está diciendo que la vida ya está allí. Todo lo que necesita es fe y confianza. Como Marta, estamos tentados a pensar que Dios demora su misericordia y perdón hacia nosotros por lo lejos que hemos estado o estamos de él. Cuatro días en la tumba, eso es mucho tiempo. Para nosotros significa un viaje de por vida. Cada uno de nosotros podría ver en estos cuatro días algo diferente. Para algunos, puede ser todo el tiempo que han estado fuera de la Iglesia, y pueden pensar que hay un hedor y que Dios lo pensará dos veces antes de ofrecerles su misericordia. Para otros puede ser el momento en que hemos descuidado celebrar el sacramento de la reconciliación donde Dios nos da una lluvia espiritual para limpiarnos de nuestros pecados. Aún así, para otros podría ser el momento en que hemos estado luchando contra la adicción de cualquier tipo. Hoy, Jesús nos está llamando a ti y a mí a salir de nuestras tumbas para volver a la vida.

La Eucaristía que celebramos juntos es el sacramento de nuestra resurrección con el Señor. Jesús comparte con nosotros su vida, asegurándonos que su amor por nosotros no puede ser disuadido por nuestra pecaminosidad. Queridos amigos,

A medida que continúa nuestro viaje de Cuaresma, las lecturas de las Escrituras de hoy confrontan nuestras formas de ver el mundo y todo lo que nos rodea. Las Escrituras desafían nuestra ceguera y nos invitan a esforzarnos por ver con nuestro corazón, con la esperanza de que, a la luz de Cristo, podamos llegar a ver el mundo a través de los lentes de Dios, es decir, como Dios lo ve.

Este domingo se llama “Domingo Laetare”, lo que significa que estamos invitados a regocijarnos por la cercanía de nuestra Redención. Este domingo es una “gozosa anticipación del misterio pascual”. El domingo pasado, la mujer samaritana nos llevó por el camino del discipulado, recordándonos que nuestro encuentro con Jesús siempre debe llevarnos a dar testimonio, a compartir la maravillosa experiencia con los demás. Somos hechos discípulos para hacer discípulos. Hoy, se nos recuerda que el propósito de un discípulo es crecer. Pero para hacerlo, tenemos que ser sanados de nuestra ceguera que nos impide ver el mundo a través de los ojos de la fe.

Desde la segunda lectura, escuchamos resonar la invitación a crecer como discípulos. Leemos: “Despiértate, tú que duermes, y levántate de entre los muertos, y Cristo te alumbrará”. Ser sanados de nuestra ceguera significa ver a través de la fe y tomar con valentía cualquier oportunidad que Dios nos dé para crecer. Hay tantos aquí en Santa Cruz, nuestra y vuestra familia de la Iglesia. Para profundizar, se nos ofrecen oportunidades para aprender y orar: estudio de libros, catecismo de adultos, MDS, adoración eucarística, etc. Nos hacemos más amplios a través del compromiso de servir al Señor. ¿Has pensado en unirte y servir como Lector, Ministro Eucarístico, Ministro de Hospitalidad, Acólito, Panes y Pescados, Miembro del Coro, Grupos pequeños que nos ayudan a conectarnos entre nosotros, o muchos otros ministerios donde Dios nos llama? Como discípulos, estamos aquí para despertar y crecer mientras oramos, somos voluntarios e inspiramos a otros a seguir a Cristo.

Este domingo de Laetare tendrá todo su significado solo si anticipamos esta alegría del misterio pascual al comprometernos como discípulos a orar, ofrecernos como voluntarios e inspirar a otros para nuestro propio crecimiento y el crecimiento de nuestra familia eclesial, que es el Cuerpo de Cristo. Y sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

Dear friends,

As our Lenten journey continues, today’s Scripture readings confront our ways of looking at the world and all that surrounds us. Scriptures challenge our blindness and invite us to strive to see with our hearts, with the hope that, in the light of Christ, we may come to see the world through God’s own lenses, that is as God sees it.

This Sunday is called “Laetare Sunday,” which means that we are invited to rejoice at the closeness of our Redemption. This Sunday is a “joyful anticipation of the Easter mystery.” Last Sunday, the Samaritan woman led us on the path of discipleship, reminding us that our encounter with Jesus should always lead us to bearing witness, to sharing the amazing experience with others. We are made disciples to make disciples. Today, we are reminded that the purpose of a disciple is to grow. But to do so, we have to be healed from our blindness that refrains us from seeing the world through the eyes of faith.

From the second reading, we hear the invitation to grow as disciples resonate. We read, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” To be healed from our blindness means to see through faith and take with courage any opportunity God gives us to grow. There are so many here at Holy cross, our and your Church family. To grow deeper, we are offered opportunities to learn and to pray: Book Study, Adult catechism, MDS, Eucharistic Adoration, and so on… We grow wider through commitment to serving the Lord. Have you thought about joining and serving as Lector, Eucharistic minister, Hospitality minister, Altar server, Fishes and Loaves, Choir member, Small groups which help us to connect with each other, or many other ministries where God calls us? As disciples, we are here to awake and to grow as we pray, volunteer and inspire others to follow Christ.

This Laetare Sunday will bear its full meaning only if we anticipate this joy of the Easter mystery as we commit ourselves as disciples to praying, volunteering and inspiring others for our own growth and the growth of our Church family, which is the Body of Christ. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Queridos amigos,

El domingo pasado hice un comentario sobre “cristianos anónimos”. Nuestro “Domingo de etiquetas con nombres” nos recordó que Cristo nos llama por nuestros nombres para edificar su Iglesia y hacer discípulos. Al igual que los discípulos que se conocían por sus nombres, estamos invitados a interactuar unos con otros mientras nos esforzamos por relacionarnos con nuestros nombres para la edificación de nuestra comunidad parroquial y familia de discípulos de Jesús. La lectura del evangelio de hoy nos da una idea sobre el discipulado. A la mujer samaritana se le dijo todo sobre su vida. Este encuentro asombroso y de confrontación la lleva a proclamar y compartir acerca de Jesús y su propia historia.

A nosotros también, Jesús nos está revelando nuestras verdaderas historias de vida. Todo lo que necesitamos es el coraje de ir y compartir con los demás. Si bien la mujer no asumió claramente que Jesús era el Cristo, a pesar de todas sus preguntas y las esclarecedoras respuestas de Jesús, ella fue a decirles a otros que vinieran y escucharan por sí mismos quién sería o podría ser. “¿No es él el Mesías que estamos esperando? Porque él me contó toda la historia de mi vida…” ¿Cuándo y cómo haces ese encuentro con el Señor para dejar que te cuente tu propia historia de vida? Estamos aquí para escucharlo contarnos de diferentes maneras nuestras propias historias de vida. Ahora depende de nosotros ir y reportarlo a otros mientras los invitamos a venir y escucharlo.

Amados, el discipulado no es otra cosa. Es simplemente compartir la historia de tu encuentro con quien te contó toda la historia de tu vida. Él nos ilumina para permitirnos compartir nuestras experiencias con los demás. Estoy maravillosamente asombrado por el resultado: aquellos a quienes ella relató el incidente del encuentro vienen y escuchan a Jesús ellos mismos. ¿Y qué le dicen al final? “Dijeron a la mujer: Ya no creemos por tu palabra; porque nosotros mismos hemos oído, y sabemos que éste es verdaderamente el salvador del mundo.”

Entonces, sigamos el ejemplo de la mujer samaritana hoy, mientras vamos como discípulas intencionales a compartir la experiencia de nuestro encuentro con el Señor que nos contó la historia de toda nuestra vida, con amor y compasión.

Dear friends,

Last Sunday I made a comment about “Anonymous Christians.” Our “Name Tag Sunday,” reminded us that Christ calls us by our names to build his Church and to make disciples. Like the disciples who knew each other by their names, we are invited to interact with one another as we strive to relate to each other by our names for the building up of our parish community and family of disciples of Jesus. Today’s gospel reading gives us an idea about discipleship. The Samaritan woman was told everything about her life. This astonishing and confrontational encounter leads to her proclamation and sharing about Jesus and her own story.

To us also, Jesus is revealing our true life stories. All we need is the courage to go and share with others. While the woman did not clearly assume that Jesus was the Christ, in spite of all of her questions and the enlightening responses from Jesus, she went to tell others to come and hear by themselves who this would or might be. “is he not the Messiah, we are waiting for? For he told me all my life story…” When and how do you make that encounter with the Lord to let him tell you your own life story? We are here to listen to him tell us in different ways our own life stories. It is now up to us to go and report it to others as we invite them to come and listen to him.

Beloved, discipleship is nothing else. It is just sharing the story of your encounter with the one who told you your whole life story. He is the one who knows everything about you, not to condemn or to judge you, but to show you true love and lead you on the right path. He enlightens us to allow us to share our experiences with others. I am wonderfully amazed by the outcome: those she reported the incident of the encounter come and listen to Jesus themselves. And what do they say to her at the end? “They said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.”

Brothers and sisters, this is the only thing Jesus is expecting from us: us go and share with others the story of our encounter with him. Queridos amigos,

Hay un dicho que solemos escuchar, sobre todo cuando nos vamos a enfrentar a situaciones difíciles. Dice: “Todo obra para bien del que cree en Dios”. La lectura del evangelio de hoy nos lleva a esa verdad. El evento de la Transfiguración narrado en el evangelio sigue inmediatamente a la profesión en Cesarea de Filipo, cuando Jesús hace esta pregunta a sus discípulos: “Pero vosotros, ¿quién decís que soy yo?” Simón Pedro lo proclama claramente: “Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo”. Estas últimas palabras las escuchamos dos veces con respecto a Jesús: en Su Bautismo y hoy en Su Transfiguración.

En la mente de todos los que esperaban la venida del Mesías, éste era considerado poderoso e invencible. Podemos entender lo sorprendido que estaba Pedro cuando Jesús habló de su sufrimiento y muerte. “No Señor, a ti no te puede pasar tal cosa…” Sin embargo, contrariamente a la línea de pensamiento y creencia de Pedro y de otros, eso es lo que Jesús tiene que soportar antes de resucitar a la vida de gloria. Y este es el verdadero camino a la gloria. Jesús no se detiene en el anuncio o predicción de su sufrimiento y muerte. Va más allá de todo eso para anunciar y proclamar que resucitará de entre los muertos al cabo de tres días. Sin embargo, Peter no lo entiende. Se apega a la primera parte del mensaje de Jesús.

Hoy, Jesús nos recuerda que el sufrimiento y las penas nunca tendrán la última palabra en nuestra vida si confiamos en Dios y seguimos sus pasos. Una y otra vez, nos conmueven los acontecimientos presentes que soportamos o atravesamos, particularmente los dolorosos; nos detenemos en ellos y tendemos a perder la esperanza. La transfiguración es la manifestación de quién es Jesús y hacia dónde conducirán sus sufrimientos. Jesús nos invita a mirar siempre más allá de lo que vemos con nuestros ojos humanos y sumergirnos en el plan de amor y salvación de Dios para nosotros. San Pablo lo dice claramente: “Porque considero que los sufrimientos de este tiempo presente no son dignos de ser comparados con la gloria que se nos ha de revelar” (Rom. 8:18).

Como podemos ver, es en los desafíos de nuestra vida cotidiana donde debemos experimentar la cercanía de Dios y alimentar nuestra esperanza de compartir la gloria del Señor. No es de extrañar por qué Jesús les pide a sus discípulos que bajen de la montaña. Los apóstoles querían manchar el monte, pero la obra está por delante como señala Jesús. Para que esta obra sea fructífera, Dios Padre nos da el secreto: “Escuchar” a Aquel en quien Él tiene complacencia; ese es Su Hijo Jesucristo. Por lo tanto, abramos nuestros corazones y oídos para escuchar a Jesucristo que es la fuente de nuestra paz y consuelo. Porque sólo en la medida en que le prestemos atención a Él podremos participar de Su gloria. Y sigamos curioseando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

2nd Sunday of Lent - March 5, 2023

Dear friends,

There is a saying we usually hear, especially when we are to face difficult situations. It says, “Everything works for good for one who believes in God.” Today’s gospel reading leads us to that truth. The Transfiguration event recounted in the gospel follows immediately the profession in Caesarea Philippi, when Jesus asks this question to his disciples: “But you, who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter clearly proclaims it: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” We hear these last words twice with regards to Jesus: at His Baptism and today at His Transfiguration.

In the minds of all who were awaiting the coming of the Messiah, the latter was thought powerful and invincible. We can understand how shocked Peter was when Jesus talked about his suffering and death. “No Lord, no such thing can happen to you…” However, contrarily to Peter’s and others’ line of thought and belief, that is what Jesus has to endure before rising to the life of glory. And this the true path to glory. Jesus does not stop at the announcement or prediction of his suffering and death. He goes beyond all that to announce and proclaim that he will be raised from death after three days. Yet, Peter doesn’t get it. He sticks to first part of Jesus’ message.

Today, Jesus reminds us that suffering and sorrows will never have the last word in our lives if we trust in God and follow in his footsteps. Time and again, we are moved with the present events we endure or go through, particularly painful ones; we dwell on them and tend to lose hope. The transfiguration is the manifestation of who Jesus is and where his sufferings would lead. Jesus invites us to always look beyond what we see with our human eyes and dive into God’s plan of love and salvation for us. Saint Paul says it clearly: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”(Rom. 8:18).

As we can see, it is in the challenges of our every day’s life that we should experience the closeness of God and nurture our hope of sharing in the glory of the Lord. No wonder why Jesus asks his disciples to go down from the mountain. The apostles wanted to stain on the mountain, but the work lays ahead as Jesus points out. For this work to be fruitful, God the Father gives us the secret: to “Listen” to the One with whom He is well pleased; that is His Son Jesus Christ.

Therefore, let us open our hearts and ears to listen to Jesus Christ who is the source of our peace and comfort. For it is only in so far we pay heed to Him that we can share in His glory. And let us continue to pry for one another and for our parish family.

On this first Sunday of Lent, the readings open our eyes on the consequences of the choices we make in front of events, situations, and things in our life. In the first reading, we are told that the tree in the middle of the garden was enticing; it was “good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom.” Like all of us, Adam and Eve only wanted the good. But more than the good, they wanted to be gods. How many people whish that we were gods at times? Unfortunately, they listened to the deceiving siren. They jumped to what only appears to be. They ate and their eyes were opened, not to what they longed for, but to the truth: they were creatures, not gods, nor God.

As a matter of facts, trying to be something other than who they were filled them with shame, which is feeling bad about who we are. Healthy guilt, on the other hand, means feeling bad about what we did. Shame is destructive. Guilt can give life. They went hiding not because they felt guilty, but because they were ashamed. We are reminded that we can learn what is truly good, pleasing, and desirable, rather than what only appears to be.

In the gospel reading, Satan tempts Jesus by offering what the Evil One cannot deliver: true food, ultimate authority, and true worship. At first sight what is offered appears to be good. However, only God can satisfy our deepest hungers. That is why we are to trust and not test God. Only God is worthy of our worship. Contrarily to Adam and Eve, Jesus saw through these offers because he knew the One who alone can satisfy us and is worthy of our worship and trust. That is why Saint Paul calls him the New Adam; the One who restores the balance of our relationship with God which was upset by the disobedience and the life-killing choice of the Old Adam. Forty days and nights of fasting deepened his understanding of who he and God are. That knowledge freed him to accept death on the cross, where we receive the gift of justification.

During this first week of Lent, let us reflect on our life and attempt to respond to the following questions: Have we put our trust in what only appears to be good, pleasing, and desirable, or in the One who alone can satisfy our hungry hearts? Let us ask God to open our eyes to see who we are, children of God who belong to Jesus Christ. May our Lenten journey renew our identity so that we can discover what is really good, desirable, and life-giving. And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Queridos amigos,

En este primer domingo de Cuaresma, las lecturas nos abren los ojos sobre las consecuencias de las elecciones que hacemos frente a los acontecimientos, situaciones y cosas de nuestra vida. En la primera lectura, se nos dice que el árbol en medio del jardín era tentador; era “bueno para comer, agradable a los ojos y deseable para adquirir sabiduría”. Como todos nosotros, Adán y Eva solo querían el bien. Pero más que buenos, querían ser dioses. ¿Cuántas personas desearían que fuéramos dioses a veces? Desafortunadamente, escucharon la sirena engañosa. Saltaron a lo que solo parece ser. Comieron y se les abrieron los ojos, no a lo que anhelaban, sino a la verdad: eran criaturas, no dioses, ni Dios.

De hecho, tratar de ser algo diferente a lo que eran los llenaba de vergüenza, que es sentirse mal por lo que somos. La culpa saludable, por otro lado, significa sentirse mal por lo que hicimos. La vergüenza es destructiva. La culpa puede dar vida. Se escondieron no porque se sintieran culpables, sino porque tenían vergüenza. Se nos recuerda que podemos aprender lo que es verdaderamente bueno, agradable y deseable, en lugar de lo que solo parece ser.

En la lectura del evangelio, Satanás tienta a Jesús ofreciéndole lo que el Maligno no puede ofrecer: verdadero alimento, máxima autoridad y verdadera adoración. A primera vista lo que se ofrece parece bueno. Sin embargo, solo Dios puede satisfacer nuestras más profundas ansias. Es por eso que debemos confiar y no probar a Dios. Sólo Dios es digno de nuestra adoración. A diferencia de Adán y Eva, Jesús vio a través de estas ofertas porque conocía al Único que puede satisfacernos y es digno de nuestra adoración y confianza. Por eso San Pablo lo llama el Nuevo Adán; Aquel que restablece el equilibrio de nuestra relación con Dios que fue trastornada por la desobediencia y la elección mortal del Viejo Adán. Cuarenta días y noches de ayuno profundizaron su comprensión de quiénes son él y Dios. Ese conocimiento lo liberó para aceptar la muerte en la cruz, donde recibimos el don de la justificación.

Durante esta primera semana de Cuaresma, reflexionemos sobre nuestra vida e intentemos responder a las siguientes preguntas: ¿Hemos puesto nuestra confianza en lo que solo parece ser bueno, agradable y deseable, o en Aquel que es el único que puede saciar nuestra hambre? ¿corazones? Pidámosle a Dios que abra nuestros ojos para ver quiénes somos, hijos de Dios que pertenecen a Jesucristo. Que nuestro camino de Cuaresma renueve nuestra identidad para que podamos descubrir lo que es realmente bueno, deseable y dador de vida. Y sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

Queridos amigos,

El evangelio de hoy insiste una vez más en la radicalidad que Cristo ha traído en el cumplimiento de la Ley y los profetas Continuamos nuestro camino de transformación con Jesús mientras lo escuchamos decir: “Tú tienes oído…, pero yo os digo…” El amor cristiano nace del amor con que Cristo nos ha amado; es una llamada para transformar continuamente nuestra vida. ¿Cómo se puede amar y salir a amar al propio enemigo? preguntarse. Pero eso es exactamente de lo que se trata el verdadero amor. Porque Cristo dice, si amamos solamente a los que nos aman, que diferencia habra Esto significa para nosotros y para todos los demás que el verdadero amor comienza cuando empieza a desafiar nuestros propios criterios; cuando nos saca de nuestra zona de confort, y muestra nuestra fragilidad que necesita la fuerza del Señor. Porque sin él no podemos hacer nada. El amor es dejarlo ir cuando duele el más y desafía nuestro intento de estar resentidos o de guardar rencores.

Este próximo miércoles comenzamos nuestra temporada de Cuaresma mientras recibimos Cenizas para la penitencia. Este es el tiempo reflexionamos y meditamos de manera especial sobre el significado del amor de Dios por nosotros a través de su Hijo Jesús Cristo. Esta oportunidad que se nos ofrece es un tiempo de bendición y renovación en nuestra vida cristiana como discípulos. Preparemos nuestros corazones para embarcarnos en un viaje de purificación y renovación con nuestro Señor mientras guía nosotros en el desierto.

Que el más allá de decir Amor de Dios por nosotros nos ayude a destruir los muros de nuestros deseos de venganza y permítenos dar amor siempre, incluso en las situaciones más difíciles. Porque solo cuando morimos a nosotros mismos que podamos renacer en nueva vida.

Y sigamos orando unos por otros y por nuestra familia parroquial.

Dear friends,

Today’s gospel insists once more on the radicalism Christ has brought in the fulfilment of the Law and the prophets. We continue our transformational journey with Jesus as we listen to him say: “You have heard…, but I say to you…” Christian love stems from the love with which Christ has loved us; it is a call to continuously transform our life. How can one love and go out to love one’s own enemy, we may wonder. But that is exactly what true love is all about. For Christ says, if we love only those who love us, what difference would there be? This means for us and everyone else that true love begins when it starts challenging our own criteria; when it pulls us out of our comfort zone, and displays our frailty that needs strength from the Lord. For, without him we can do nothing. Love is letting it go when it hurts the most and challenges our attempt to be resentful or to hold grudges.

This coming Wednesday we start our Lenten Season as we receive Ashes for penance. This is the time we reflect and meditate in a special way on the meaning of the love of God for us through His Son Jesus Christ. This opportunity we are offered is a time of blessing and renewal in our Christian life as disciples. Let us prepare our hearts to embark on a journey of purification and renewal with our Lord as He leads us in the desert.

May the beyond telling Love of God for us help us to destroy the walls of our desires for retaliation and enable us to always give love even in the most difficult situations. For it is only when we die to ourselves that we can be reborn to new life.

And let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.

Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God (Spanish) - January 1, 2023

Queridos amigos,

Hoy es el comienzo de un nuevo año. Un año de gracia y bendición que el Señor ofrece a sus hijos. Esta bendición por la que damos gracias a Dios se nos hace expresamente presente a través de su Hijo Jesús, nacido de la Virgen María cuya fiesta celebramos hoy. Celebramos la Solemnidad de María, la Santa Madre de Dios. Por ella ha llegado al mundo la verdadera Paz, y nosotros somos parte de su construcción. Por eso, junto a esta celebración, este día es también la Jornada Mundial de Oración por la Paz. En este día, el Papa Francisco nos exhorta a todos a “no pensar más exclusivamente en hacer espacio para nuestros intereses personales o nacionales; en cambio, debemos pensar en términos del bien común, reconociendo que pertenecemos a una comunidad mayor, y abriendo nuestras mentes y corazones a la fraternidad humana universal”.

La paz llama a la unidad, que Jesús vino a instaurar con su mensaje de amor y misericordia. Sin embargo, el amor y la misericordia no se pueden experimentar sin discípulos. Por lo tanto, aprovecho esta oportunidad para invitarnos a todos aquí en Holy Cross a reflexionar sobre nuestra declaración de misión que nos recuerda nuestra identidad como discípulos de Jesucristo. Es sólo a través de nuestro compromiso con esa misión que haremos presente el reino de Dios en nuestro mundo. Mientras nos involucramos en el proceso de “Reconstruir” como guía para nuestra renovación, invito a todos y cada uno de nosotros a hacer de este proceso su propio camino de renovación en nuestra relación con Jesús para la edificación de su reino.

Para que este proceso de renovación se haga realidad en nuestra familia parroquial, hacemos de las siguientes siglas la principal inspiración de vida: V.I.P. (Voluntariado, Inspirar, Orar).

Los discípulos oran: A través de la oración, aprovechamos tantas oportunidades en nuestra parroquia para fortalecer nuestra relación con Cristo. La oración debe y es el diario para que florezca nuestra vida cristiana. Este año es para nosotros aquí en Holy Cross un año de renovación en el compromiso de oración.

Los discípulos inspiran (invitan): Se espera que nuestra forma de vida como discípulos sea una inspiración continua para los demás. A través de nuestro compromiso con la fe, invitamos a otros a entablar una relación personal con Jesús. Después de encontrarse con el Señor, “lo primero que hizo Andrés fue buscar a su hermano Simón y decirle: “Hemos encontrado al Mesías” (es decir, al Cristo)”. Mi vida, palabras y obras inspiran a otros y los invitan a seguir y amar a Jesús.

Discípulos Voluntarios (Servir): Este nuevo año también es un tiempo que se nos ofrece para meditar sobre las formas en que podemos involucrarnos en el servicio al Señor en nuestra familia parroquial. Estamos invitados a pasar del mantenimiento a la misión, de consumidores a discípulos intencionales uniéndonos a un ministerio.

Como parte de Holy Cross, me defino como un "VIP de Holy Cross". ¿Y usted? ¿Quién dices que eres?

Que María Santísima, la Santa Madre de Dios, cuya solemnidad celebramos hoy, nos inspire con su “SÍ” y nos ayude a responder al llamado de su Hijo al discipulado.

Dear friends,

Today is the beginning of a new year. A year of grace and blessing which the Lord offers to His children. This blessing for which we thank God is made expressly present to us through His Son Jesus, born from the Virgin Mary whose Feast Day we celebrate today. We celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Through her, true Peace has come to the world, and we are a part of the building up of it. This is why alongside this celebration, this day is also the World Day of Prayer for Peace. On this day, Pope Francis exhorts us all to “no longer think exclusively of carving out space for our personal or national interests; instead, we must think in terms of the common good, recognizing that we belong to a greater community, and opening our minds and hearts to universal human fraternity.”

Peace calls to unity, which Jesus came to establish with his message of love and mercy. Love and mercy cannot however be experienced without disciples. Therefore, I take this opportunity to invite all of us here in Holy Cross to reflect on our mission statement that reminds us of our identity as disciples of Jesus Christ. It is only through our commitment to that mission that we will make the kingdom of God present in our world. As we engage in the process of “Rebuilt” as guideline for our renewal, I invite each and all of us to make this process his/her own journey of renewal in our relationship with Jesus for the building up of his kingdom.

For this process of renewal to become reality in our parish family, we make the following acronym the leading life inspiration: V.I.P. (Volunteer, Inspire, Pray).

Disciples Pray: Through Prayer, we take the so many opportunities in our parish to strengthen our relationship with Christ. Prayer should and is the daily for our Christian life to flourish. This year is for us here at Holy Cross a year of renewal in commitment to prayer.

Disciples Inspire (Invite): Our way of life as disciples is expected to be an ongoing inspiration for others. Through our commitment to faith, we invite others to engage in a personal relationship with Jesus. After encountering the Lord, “the first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).” My life, words and deeds inspire others and invite them to follow and love Jesus.

Disciples Volunteer (Serve): This new year is also a time we are offered to meditate on the ways we can get involved in the service to the Lord in our parish family. We are invited to move from maintenance to mission, from consumers to intentional disciples by joining in a ministry.

As a part of Holy Cross, I define myself as a “Holy Cross VIP”. What about you? Who do you say that you are?

May the Blessed Mary, the Holy Mother of God, whose solemnity we celebrate today inspire us with her “YES” and help us respond to her Son’s call to discipleship.

The Nativity of the Lord (Spanish) - December 25, 2022

Queridos amigos,

Es Navidad, la Natividad de Nuestro Señor Jesús, el Hijo de Dios.

Hoy, me gustaría desearles a todos una Bendita y feliz Navidad. La Natividad es el cumplimiento de nuestra esperanza. El profeta Isaías es muy claro: “El pueblo que andaba en tinieblas ha visto una gran luz”. Los atributos que escuchamos desde el primer domingo de Adviento son aquí tangibles: “Lo nombran Maravilla-Consejero, Dios-Héroe, Padre-Eterno, Príncipe de Paz”. Recordamos las palabras del profeta Isaías en el primer domingo de Adviento. Alimentando nuestra esperanza por la venida del Hijo de Dios, nos dijo que “Él impondrá condiciones a muchos pueblos. Convertirán sus espadas en rejas de arado y sus lanzas en podaderas; una nación no levantará la espada contra otra, ni se adiestrarán para la guerra”. A él se nos da el Salvador que trae paz a la tierra y alegría a los corazones.

La Navidad nos trae la esperanza de que aunque la vida esté llena de desafíos que puedan llevarnos a la desesperanza, Dios siempre estará allí para enjugar nuestras lágrimas. Aunque no sea hoy, sus promesas siempre se cumplirán. Por eso celebramos en Navidad la victoria de la esperanza.

Hoy, me gustaría una vez más decirles lo agradecido y bendecido que estoy por todos y cada uno de ustedes aquí. Cada vez que miro a cada uno de ustedes, mi esperanza de un mañana mejor se fortalece y enciende incesantemente. Por eso, a todos los que eligen Santa Cruz como Iglesia donde celebrar esta Navidad, les digo esto:

Si usted es un invitado o visitante, me gustaría darle la bienvenida personalmente y agradecerle por elegir a Holy Cross como su hogar espiritual y su familia. Te deseo a ti y a todos tus seres queridos una Feliz, Bendecida y Feliz Navidad. Que el Señor Jesús les traiga todas las bendiciones de una Navidad alegre y pacífica. Si ha estado alejado de la Iglesia por un tiempo, no se preocupe. Estamos aquí para darle la bienvenida. La Iglesia no es un santuario para los santos sino un hospital para los pecadores. Por eso estamos todos aquí. Me gustaría darle la bienvenida de regreso a casa, deseándoles a usted y a sus seres queridos una feliz, bendecida y feliz Navidad. Te amamos y queremos tenerte aquí con nosotros. Si has perdido a un ser querido durante este año, puedo sentir tu dolor al mirar esa silla vacía en la celebración de la Navidad. Sepan que los elevo en mis oraciones especialmente en esta Eucaristía. Tú y tus seres queridos son queridos para nosotros y quiero que saques al Niño en el Pesebre que es la fuente de nuestro consuelo y paz. Que el Niño Jesús os dé la paz que viene a poner en el mundo. A los feligreses de Holy Cross, gracias por la bendición que son para esta, su familia parroquial. Usted y sus seres queridos son recordados durante esta misa. Me gustaría desearles a todos una feliz, bendecida y feliz Navidad. Que el Señor que viene a nosotros nos fortalezca y nos guíe por el camino del discipulado intencional. A todos y cada uno de ustedes les deseo una feliz, bendecida y Feliz Navidad. Que la Paz del Señor habite en vosotros y en vuestros hogares.
