Trinity Sunday - June 16, 2019

Dear friends,

The end of Easter season carries with it some of the truly great themes of our Catholic faith. Last week we celebrated the solemnity of Pentecost which followed the Ascension. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity, when God manifest and reveals the mystery of his Godhead in fullness. The following week, we will dive into the mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ, the feast of Corpus Christi.

But let us come back to the mystery we celebrate today. In church history, so many attempts were made to explain the truth about the God who is one in three persons. Even though some of these attempts gave us a glimpse of the human grasp of the mystery, we all are driven by the certainty that God and his Triune mystery is beyond human grasp. It is through the eyes of faith that we can approach this mystery and experience the incommensurable love that unites the three persons of the Holy Trinity without reducing one to another. It is through discovery of God’s intrinsic love that we can approach the singularity of each one of the three without separating nor confusing them.

As disciples, we are called to live that union of love that characterizes the Holy Trinity. We are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit in order to be the exemplification of the Trinitarian love in the world. The Holy Spirit given us draws us into the very life of God. The consequence of this union for us is that the Trinity is not primarily a doctrine to teach but an experience to live. This is because the mystery of the Holy Trinity allows us to experience the ways God is a part of our life; He creates, sustains, redeems, and guides us. The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the powerful truth that God is close to us as Creator, Redeemer, and Guide. This explains even the peculiarity of Christian life and faith, that we have the privilege, the grace and the power of knowing God as He is: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

As we strive to embrace the truth about our Triune God, let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish family.
